Does every language "keep the bear in the bathroom"?

Post by John Little »

Just browsing the new posts in various language forums and I wondered if the phrases were the same in every language.

Duolingo is famous for its odd phrases like "we keep the bear in the bathroom" (portuguese) but I have noticed a few that i don't recognise from my course. I believe the stories and characters are the same for each language but do Ukrainians keep their bears in their bathrooms?

In Russian I didn't came across a bear in the bathroom. But right in one of the first lessons... A monkey had my backpack and it was in the metro.

From what I can recall in the Russian course, mostly the bear(s) just stays in the park. However, there are "My horse is an artist, and not an architect" and "My snake is at home" popping up quite often for me. Still haven't ventured far enough into the Ukrainian course to verify about bear in the bathroom there. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Either the Spanish or Portuguese course the animals read books. 🙂 Forgot which one , maybe both. ( They do nomads things , too, like playing ball.

I have learned some animals In Ukrainian , but so far , they aren’t doing anything wild.

In Greek all animals are pink and possibly like hanging out at the museum while eating pink rice and regular gyros.

Notice in any language course, all animals love the apples?
French animals eat pizza.

I can't remember any animals eating apples in the Hebrew course. Some people think they see pink elephants in Hebrew.

In the Arabic course, we don’t have a bear in the bathroom, but “I brush by dog’s teeth every morning.” And “I work in my cat’s company and I am always busy.”

Learning: Italian and Arabic.

In Russian course typically it's bird(s) that eats apples if I remember correctly. Also, a fly/flies made appearance strangely quite frequent for me.

Not to mention, the Russian course really loves giving mixed signals. Depending on day or the number of time you take the 'Animals' lesson, bird either does or does not drink milk. I found the 'does drink' option today.

Ants, I think. "formigas".

But I am surprised that every course has a completely different database of sentances - even if the stories are the same.

A bit off topic as it's not Duolingo related, but it partly sounds Duolingo-ish....

If a mod thinks it should be moved, just do it! It's fine with me.

This is really sad that they would do that, I do not find that funny like the sentences in the Duolingo course.

Corinnebelle, I didn't say it's funny, but it reminded me of the strange sentences Duolingo sometimes offers.
Actually I was shocked that something like that happened.

Yes, definitely the "same kind of sentence", just vastly different circumstances. I understand you didn't think it was funny, some of the animal sentences on Duolingo are funny though  !

I’ve seen bears a lot on the English—>Spanish lessons; but at least so far, none en el baño 😉

Well, I would think the bear would like to sleep in the closet, but the duck paddle in the bathroom tub?

Hmm... wondered about that myself. I guess when animals are domesticated they lose all sense of direction in life. Sad really...

Raymond-The-Cat I suppose the bear would sleep in tub too! I just can't see a duck in the closet, unless he's stuffed or he's a baby and has a warm light. Ducks love water!

Maybe he's a wood duck. They are born in dark places.
