Hearts or Dumbbell practice

Post by Saperlipopette! »

If you do a hearts practice or a dumbbell practice, 90% of the time you will get a sixteen questions from a skill that you have previously completed. What I'm going to do here is show you how you can determine what you've just practiced.

I think this method can be used for the other languages too, but the details here are so specific to the language that I posted it in the French forum.

The first question I got in a recent hearts lesson was:

Votre prénom
Your first name

I think it required the English translation using tiles. This question was testing either the vocab word votre or prénom. What I did was search the French Word List Old Tree for prénom. The only occurrence of this word was the vocabulary list for the skill Travel 3.

The same skill is now called "Talk to someone formally" which can be found in 19-5, 20-3, and 21-4 in the snake. Here is the vocabulary list for that skill:

Travel 3 : SEE TIP

  1. allez-vous, madame, monsieur, excusez-moi, de rien, mademoiselle
  2. manger, pouvez, voyagez, voulez-vous, boire, quelque chose, je ne sais pas
  3. Senegal, nom, prénom, venez, voyagez-vous, quel
  4. profession, nationalité, destination, venez-vous, Afrique, quelle
  5. attendre, pouvez-vous, bagage, vol, en retard, question

At this point I was pretty sure I was going to get sixteen questions from that skill Travel 3. What I did was jot down the rest of the questions and looked for the vocabulary words in each question:

prénom

Votre prénom.
Your first name.

Afrique

Allez-vous en Afrique ou en Europe ?
Are you going to Africa or Europe ?

allez vous

Monsieur

Comment allez-vous Monsieur Fabre ?
How are you Mr. Faber ?

profession

Ma profession.
My profession.

Afrique

Sénégal

Le Sénégal est un pays d'Afrique.
Sénégal is an African country.

allez-vous

Monsieur

Comment allez-vous Monsieur ?
How are you, sir ?

nom

quel

Quel est votre nom de famille Monsieur ?
What is your last name sir ?

prénom

Le prénom
The first name

profession

Madame

Quelle est votre profession Madame ?
What is your profession ma'am ?

pouvez

Pouvez-vous voyager ?
Can you travel ?

profession

Madame

quelle

Quelle est votre profession Madame ?
What is your profession Ma'am ?

Sénégal

J'aime le Sénégal.

allez-vous

Madame

Comment allez-vous Madame Morel?

profession

Monsieur

Quelle est votre profession Monsieur ?
What is your profession Monsieur ?

pouvez

Pouvez-vous attendre ici ?
Can you wait here ?

voyagez-vous

Voyagez-vous avec votre mari ?
Are you traveling with your husband ?

Sometimes one, two, or three vocabulary words are tested in each exercise. Here, it is very easy to match the vocabulary word to the list because it's an easy skill with pretty specific answers. It was also pretty easy to figure out the lesson; I was able to name that tune from the first sentence.

Some creativity is allowed, i.e., I answered the last question Est-ce que vous voyagez avec votre mari ? For these purposes though, I looked up the recommended Duolingo answer and that's what I wrote here. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what is tested with alternative accepted translations.

I've suggested to Duolingo that they should put this information on the Practice Complete screen. Here is one way to do it:

for Duo the most important is to show as many cartoons as possible, what you learn at the same time hardly matters

Here's a second example. I hit the hearts button and did the first two questions, then I searched the French Word List, Old Tree.

curry

épice

Le curry est une épice.
Curry is a spice.

raisin

Tu veux du raisin ?
Do you want some grapes ?

The first occurrence of curry was in lesson 4.23 Cooking, and that skill also had épice and raisin in the vocabulary list.

4.23 Cooking : SEE TIP

  1. vegan, alcool, le, la, poulet, sucrer, saler
  2. vide, bol, par, sushi, y en, frite, plein
  3. sauf, n'y en a plus, poivre, curry, fourchette, épice, n'y en a pas
  4. il faut, omelette, crème fraîche, recette, farine, raisin, chantilly
  5. ça a l'air, mélanger, frais, four
    ***

I felt confident I was going to get sixteen questions on the old skill 4.23 Cooking, which is found on the snake in Unit 57-7 Comment on foods, Unit 58-7 Comment on foods, and Unit 59-6 Comment on foods. Here's the rest of the questions:

sucrer

sucré

Duolingo often lists the verb in the vocabulary list when the lesson is actually the past participle of the verb being used as an adjective.
Ce gâteau est très sucré.
This cake is very sweet.

curry

le

Duo tu aimes le curry ?
Duo do you like curry?

curry

n'y en a plus

J'ai besoin de curry, mais il n'y en a plus.

par

The vocabulary list only has the preposition par, but the lesson is more specific than that.

fois par yyy

Ils mangent des pizzas une fois par semaine.
They are eating pizza once a week.

fois par yyy

Je mange avec mes parents une fois par mois.
I eat with my parents once a month

omelette

Je prépare une omelette.
I am making an omelette.

Looking up these videos are part of the reason why I like to figure out what is being practiced.
Trucs craquants : les omelettes
Les œufs Canada, 1:33

sushi

Les sushis sont un plat japonais.
Sushi is a Japanese dish.

The videos don't have to be related to grammar.
Les sushis, Kevin Tran.

fois par yyy

Je mange avec mes parents une fois par mois.
I eat with my parents once a month

aller au restaurant

fois par yyy

Nous allons au restaurant trois fois par mois
We go out to eat three times a month.

sucrer

sucré

C'est trop sucré
This is too sweet

raisin

il faut

Il faut du raisin pour faire du vin.
You need grapes to make wine

sucrer

sucré

saler

salé

Ce plat est sucré ou salé
Is this dish salty or sweet ?

Ça a l'air

Ça a l'air super bon!
Ça a l'air vraiment bon!

With Ça as the subject in the expression ça a l'air bon, the adjective has to be masculine-gendered.

n'y en a pas

Il veut du thé mais il n'y en a pas.
Il a envie de thé mais il n'y en a pas.
Hé wants tea, but there isn't any.

The characters could be wearing chefs hats instead of playing music after this practice lesson concluded.

If they told us what we practiced, I think we'd get more out of the lessons.

Here's a third example.

The first question in the first lesson:

appeler (conditional)

J'appellerais plutôt Camille pour réparer ça.
I would rather call Camille to repair that.

One clue in that sentence is the conditional form of appeller, so this sentence had to be after the last few skills in set 7. I searched the French word list for the verb appeler and the first time it came up after set 6 was the skill 8.6 fix it. Then I did a few more sentences:

appeler (conditional)

Tu t'appellerais qui pour t'aider à déménager ?
Who would you call to help you move.

éteindrait

Il éteindrait la musique pour se concentrer.
Hé would turn off the music to
concentrate.

éteindait was also in the list for 8.6 fix it. So I did a few more:

éteindrait

Elle éteindrait son portable pendant les vacances.
She would turn off her cell phone during vacation

coffre

Je ne veux pas savoir ce qu'il y a dans ce coffre.
I don't want to know what there is in this chest.

Coffre was also in the vocab list for 8.6 Fix It. At this point I figured the rest of the sentences were from the skill 8.6 Fix it and it was just going to be a matter of checking that out:

8.6 Fix It

  1. jeter, appeler, éteindre, radiateur, outil
  2. jetterait, éteindrait, ampoule, prise
  3. alarme, serrure
  4. jetteraient, éteindraient, tas, coffre
  5. orage, foudre, tonnerre, branche

coffre

Il y a une odeur bizarre qui sort de ce coffre.
There is a weird smell that is coming out of this chest.

foudre

Moi, j'ai trop peur de sortir à cause de la foudre.
Me, I'm too scared to go out because of the lightning.

jeter (cond)

jetterais

Je ne jetterais mes livres pour rien au monde.
I would not throw away my books for anything in the world.

foudre

Moi, j'ai trop peur de sortir à cause de la foudre.
Me, I'm too scared to go out because of the lightning.

foudre

La foudre peut être vraiment dangereuse.
Lightning can be really dangerous

foudre

tonnerre

Lequel vient en premier, la foudre ou le tonnerre?
Which comes first, lightning or thunder ?

foudre

orage

Faites attention à la foudre pendant l'orage.
Be careful of the lightning during the thunderstorm.

coffre

Il y a une odeur bizarre qui sort de ce coffre.
There is a weird smell that is coming out of this chest.

rappelleraient

(appeler family )
Eux, ils nous rappelleraient tout de suite.
They would call us back right away.

Rappeler is not in the vocabulary list, but in past lessons I found that there are patterns to the conjugation of verbs like appeler and jeter, and there are other similar verbs that follow this pattern. They're called families of verbs.

Rappeler is in the appeler family. One way to check it is the verb conjugation tool on l'Obs. It lists verbs having similar conjugations to a particular verb.

![](

foudre

orage

Faites attention à la foudre pendant l'orage.
Be careful of the lightning during the thunderstorm.

éteindrait

Il éteindrait la lumière pour lui faire peur.
He would turn off the light to scare her.

jetterait

Elle jetterait ses déchets n'importe où, c'est nul.
She would throw her waste anywhere that stinks.

All sixteen questions had at least one vocabulary word from the list 8.6 Fix it. The old skill 8.6 Fix It is 123-2, 124-1, and 125-1 in the snake.

From this and the two other examples you can see how to discover the skill that Duolingo is reviewing for most of the hearts or Dumbbell exercises. The skill in unit 2 was simple, nearly every vocabulary word had an exact match in the sentences. For the next two skills I showed some techniques to map words in the sentence to the vocabulary list.

In the next few days I should get an example that covers most of the ten percent of the cases where all sixteen sentences are not from one previously-completed skill.

Here's a practice lesson with questions from different lessons, starting with the question everyone knows:

Un chien et un chat.
A dog and a cat.

Everyone knows where this is coming from:

Basics 1 : SEE TIP
1 . un, homme, garçon, chat, et
2 . une, femme, suis, fille, je
3 . chien, cheval, c'est, tu, es
4 . croissant, orange, mange, manges, pizza

I'm not going to list the vocabulary for the rest of these questions. In the first lesson most words are vocabulary words.

Tu manges un croissant.
You are eating a croissant

Une femme et une fille.
A woman and a girl.

Une femme mange une orange.
A woman is eating an orange.

Un cheval et un chat
A horse and a cat.

C'est un chien.

Un croissant et une orange.
A croissant and an orange.

Tu es un chat ?
Are you a cat ?

Je suis une femme.
I am a woman.

Êtes-vous Alice ?
Tu es Alice ?
Are you Alice ?
The vocabulary for the alternate answers won't be in the vocabulary list for the lesson. That is why I also listed the recommended answer, found in the header of the sentence discussion.

Un chat et une pizza.
A cat and a pizza.

Je suis choquée que tu mettes ce tableau par terre.
I'm shocked you put that painting on the ground.
Huh, you might ask ? I'll explain it later.

Marie est étonnée que je vivre avec une artiste.
Marie is surprised that I'm living with an artist.
I'll explain this one too.

Un homme et un garçon.
A man and a boy

Un garçon mange un croissant.
A boy is eating a croissant.

Of the 16 questions, 14 were from the old skill 1.1 Basics 1 and two were from 8.25 Commentary. It's hard to figure out from the vocabulary list that both sentences are from 8.25 from the vocabulary list, so instead I've listed my notes.

If you want to skip the notes, here are the conclusions:

  • The first question I had not seen before, but you can tell that the lesson is the subjunctive of mettre.
  • For the second question, the lesson is the subjunctive of vivre. Vivre isn't in the vocabulary list for 8.25 Commentary, so you may ask how do I know it is part of that lesson. The answer is below, I got the question while doing 136-5 in the snake; I've highlighted that sentence in my notes below.

8.25 Commentary

  1. avoir, mettre, métal, chef-d'œuvre, arrière-plan
  2. ait, spectateur, séance, chut, entracte

Unit 136-5 Express Opinions
Unit 137-2
Unit 138-2

Here is how I think these questions work. Birdbrain picks the practice lesson, and here it decided on the skill 1.1 Basics.

Session Manager picks the actual questions you get. For these types of practice lessons you get 10-14 of the sixteen questions from the lesson that Birdbrain picked, and 2-6 questions come from waterfall skills. These are skills at level 0 or level 1 and, less likely, L2 in the snake. Waterfall is what was also called the hover method in the tree.

Here, the questions from Birdbrain's selection and from Session Manager are obvious because of the disparity in the lessons. Usually you can tell the waterfall questions if you're looking for them because they're skills you just worked on.

Session manager doesn't necessarily pick questions from one waterfall skill. Also notice too that you may get questions you have not seen before, like the one here with mettre. I'll often screenshot those then add them to my notes later on.

Most of the ten percent of hearts or Dumbbell lessons work like this example.
