Hi,

Do I post my translation here ? I scrolled to try and find the page we all post on and I couldn’t find the link.

Thank you .

Hi, Meli,

Send your translation to MustafaOuz526752.

We all need now to write at the TJ page the sentences we received. I'll just check that the list of names there corresponds to the final order in which we played this round —as far as I am aware:

MustafaOuz526752 : English (original version)
vero-bis : French
Explorer : Portuguese
Cifi : German
Izabela : English
@gmads : Spanish
MoniqueMaRie : Italian
Stasia : French
Dana_Dany Danuta : Polish
duome : Russian
Meli578588 : Italian
MustafaOuz526752 : English (final version)

Once everyone has written there the received sentence, MustafaOuz526752 will copy them and publish them in here to be compared and commented :D

Cheers!!

Should we now start posting our received translations at our Translation Jumble page (which does not seem to be available at the moment)?

I will rarely be on the forum between now and middle of December, so if there is another round within the next two weeks, don't put me in, but I will be back after December 15. :geek:

There is no error in your text, besides in the last sentence: "....zu Hause zu sein". (nearly didn't notice it)

I would only change the order of the word "etwas" in this sentence:: "ich nahm meinen Fuß etwas vom Gaspedal" (but don't ask me for Grammatical reasons...) or even better: ich nahm meinen Fuß ein wenig vom Gaspedal

A comma is required in the last sentence after einfach "man wünscht sich einfach, in stürmischen Nächten zu Hause zu sein";
Here I know the rule because our German teacher really drilled us on it:
"der erweiterte Infinitiv wird durch ein Komma getrennt" - "the extended infinitive is separated by a comma".

You really did a good job. I'd only make a couple of minor changes:

Estava chovendo a cântaros.

 • Ai de qualquer pessoa → ai daqueles: it's shorter and sounds more natural.
 • Tirei o meu pé → tirei o pé: if you're the driver, it's understood that it's your foot. There's no need for the possessive adjective.
 • Tive → tinha: there isn't really a big difference. However, I'd use tive for specific moments in the past (that night) and tinha for repeated actions (driving during stormy nights like that).

Translator Jumble game. Sixth round. Results.

After each username is the sentence s/he received.

 1. MustafaOuz526752 – The rain was falling heavily. Woe betide anyone on the road because it was like driving through a thick curtain of water. I eased off the accelerator a little; I had to be careful driving on wild nights like this. The last thing you want is to have an accident or breakdown. You just want to be at home on these stormy nights.

 3. Explorer – Estava chovendo a cântaros.

 4. Cifi – Es regnete in Strömen.

 5. Izabela – It was pouring rain. Woe to those who were on the motorway, because it was like driving through a thick curtain of water. I released the pedal a little. On wild nights like this, I had to drive carefully. The last thing you would want is to get into a car accident or to have a breakdown. One just longs to be at home on stormy nights.

 11. Méli578588 – Pioveva forte.

 12. MustafaOuz526752 – It was raining heavily. People on the street were annoyed because it was like driving in a thick curtain. I slightly reduced the pressure on the gas pedal. On such a crazy night, I had to steer carefully. The last thing you want is to have an accident or have any kind of car trouble. On such a stormy night, my only wish would be to be home.

So, this is how the original, an intermediate, and the final sentences look:

 • The rain was falling heavily. Woe betide anyone on the road because it was like driving through a thick curtain of water. I eased off the accelerator a little; I had to be careful driving on wild nights like this. The last thing you want is to have an accident or breakdown. Given there were two French translations, here they are to be compared:

I'm here rather infrequently and each time I try I see the "unavailable" error message. So I'll just post it here:

In my translation I had to decide the gender of the narrator because that's how Polish language works, so I made the narrator female.

"Woe betide anyone."

Wow! I did know the word "woe," both as an interjection or as an noun, but I don't remember ever seeing the word "betide" :o
So I searched.

Betide:

 • as an intransitive verb: to happen especially as if by fate
 • as a transitive verb: to happen to : BEFALL —used chiefly in the phrase woe betide, for example, woe betide our enemies.

In Spanish "woe betide anyone" can be: "ay de cualquiera" or "pobre de cualquiera."

You beat me to it :D

English and French sentences generally tell the same idea. One change that draws my attention is: woe betide anyone on the road & malheur à n’importe qui est sur la route > people on the street were annoyed & les gents dans la rue étaient affligé

Here, the narrator's worry about other people driving in this severe weather changed to the fact that some other people found driving in this weather annoying. I didn't expect such a shift in meaning; I wonder where it originates from.

I didn't know it either. Nor in Spanish, nor in Portuguese "ai daqueles". And in French "Malheur à celui/ceux" is an old expression, it's not much used nowadays, I think.

Men have been starting now several rounds... so, my vote for the next round goes to...

@MoniqueMaRie :!:

I feel honoured, but unfortunately I have so much to do at the moment that I cannot take on this task. Please ask me again in February. The winter months of December and January are when I always work the most.

If anyone started a new jumble, I would like to be scheduled so that I can use the days between the years, 29.12 - 3.1, for this.
But I can imagine that now, in the run-up to Christmas, many of us are very busy, if not professionally, then perhaps just privately.

I looked at the list of participants. Lama is still there with ??? in there. But she has also left the forum

I think that you're right, we best wait until next year :D

Cheers!

I think we have French twice, too (#2 & 8), perhaps you could add these?

I am sorry I just saw your message. I have been dealing with insomnia for the past two weeks. But I see Gmads has already added a comparison; Could you explain our mistakes and correct them, vero-bis?

Thank you for the comparisons of the different English and Italian translations.

All the credit goes to Gmads ;)

...and you can look for five mistakes in my French text, most of them accents beside one

It seems my translation isn't free from mistakes either :D You learned not to do the same mistakes again, and that's what matters anyway. ;)

"lever le pied" est bien l'expression qu'on utilise ;
