on ne fait pas boire un âne qui n' pas soif

Post by MoniqueMaRie »

https://fr.glosbe.com/fr/en/on ne saura ... a pas soif

signification : si quelqu'un est têtu, on ne peut pas le forcer à faire quelque chose qu'il ne veut pas faire

literally: you can't make an unthirsty donkey drink

the english proverb is leading a horse to the water: you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink

Glosbe and, it seems, everyone else, uses the Conditional savoir in the expression:
On ne saurait faire boire un âne s'il n'a pas soif.

It's easier to remember the way you wrote it but I wonder if it sounds "off". Also, I can't figure out why there's no pas or other negation in the first part of the compound clause in the linked resources.
