You can use od(+gen) in some simple nominative/accusative sentences, and sometimes it might sound more natural: pies jest większy od kota; wolę herbatę od kawy.

You can use niż pretty much everywhere: pies jest większy niż kot; szybciej dotrzesz pociągiem niż autobusem; jest cieplej w domu niż w ogrodzie; lepiej późno niż wcale.

There’s also the related aniżeli, which is more common between clauses.
