Learners, especially those of us who want to sport an excellent accent in Romanian, are well advised to practice exerciții de dicție, phonetic exercises. Some of the best exercises for this purpose are tongue-twisters, which in Romanian are variously known ad încurcătură de limbă, îmbârligătură de limbă, sclintelă de limbă, scrântitură de limbă, frântură de limbă, frământare de limbă. I did some research and found a whole bunch of them, and here are some of the best-known ones that I like.
Piatra crapă capra, capra crapă piatra. = The stone breaks the goat, the goat breaks the stone. (This is the original version, but there are countless variations on it out there, like this one:
Bucură-te cum s-a bucurat Bucuroaia de bucuria lui Bucurel când s-a întors bucuros de la Bucureşti. = Rejoice Bucuroaia rejoiced at the joy of Bucurel when here returned joyous form Bucharest.
Prin Vulturi vântul viu vuia. = In Vulturi (place name, 'Eagles'), strong wind howled.
Stanca stă-n castan ca Stan. = Stanca sits in a chestnut tree like Stan.
Şase saşi în şase saci. = Six Saxons in six sacks.
Oaia aia e a ei, eu i-o iau. = That sheep is hers, I take it. (Vowels only!)
Un vultur stă pe pisc c-un pix în plisc. = An eagle sits on a hill with a pen in its beak.
Pe cap un capac, pe capac un ac. = On the head a lid, on the lid a needle.
E pestriţă prepeliţa pestriţă, dar mai pestriţi sunt puii prepeliţei pestriţe. = The motley quail is motley, but motlier still are the chicks of the motley quail.
O babă bălană mănâncă o banană babană. = A blonde old lady eats a huge banana.
Soră Sară, n-ai sărit asară să vezi carnea cum se sară? = Sister Sarah, didn't you stop by last night to see how the meat is being salted?
And here is one more: Pila-n pungă, punga-n pilă, pilalău cu pila lungă, a pilit pila pe dungă. Romanian folks are practicing it here, hilariously:
