• subject
• { main verb / adjective, noun, etc }

So, for "come va la tua ricerca?" the correct (i.e. non-literal, word for word) translation should be:

• question word: how
• auxiliary verb: is
• subject: your research
• main verb: going

Just as your own question: "how is it grammatically incorrect?"

Granted, it's a dated construction, but it's still recognised (at the very least as slang). Maybe it's because I live in North America.

I took it as slang, but I wouldn't have imagined it being an outdated form, let alone that Shakespeare used it!

How goes your research?

I live in the US and it seems fine to me. Note that there is a strong preference on duolingo for the present progressive tense in English translations of present-tense verbs in other languages, not just in Italian. It's just the whim of the course contributors. I have reported several of these. For example, the default translation of io vado into English is "I am going". Until someone reports it, "I go" will be counted as incorrect. Just report it and move on.
