Only 10 million in Portugal? And I thought the population of Brasil was over 260 million.

Edit: well Portugal is correct. Bit of a surprise. Not much more than Scotland. And I have no idea why I thought Brasil had more, either. Maybe that's the USA.

Another edit: well, the USA has 340 million. I thought Brasil was on par but obviously not

@John Little Sim, Portugal é um país pequeno.

Yep! Portuguese people have always had a tendency to emigrate, and those who stay simply don't have enough kids.

Just asked Google how many Spanish speakers there were in South America and how many Portuguese speakers.

There are 210 million Spanish speakers but 214 million Portuguese speakers.

So the Brasileiros have it!

Data updated as of September 21, 2023

Brazil: 216.7 M (- 0.3 M)
Angola: 36.9 M (+ 0.8 M)
Mozambique: 34.1 M (+ 0.1 M)
Portugal: 10.2 M (+ 0.1 M)
Guinea-Bissau: 2.2 M (+ 0.1 M)
East Timor: 1.4 M (=)
Cape Verde: 600 K (+ 26 K)
São Tomé and Príncipe: 233 K (+ 2 K)
Equatorial Guinea: ≈ 17 K (+ 2 K)
Macau (China): ≈ 12 K (=)

Total: 302.3 M (+ 0.7 M)

Note 1: The number of Portuguese speakers increased by about 3.5 million last year (298.8 M ➝ 302.3 M).

Note 2: The decrease in Brazil's population is not due to a drop in the birth rate, but to an adjustment of the forecast according to United Nations reports.

That decrease in the number of Brasilians in Brazil is probably due to half of our Daughter in Law's Brasilian family being over here for the summer.

Fonte: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Língua_po ... ma_oficial
