Can i find out how many people are studying a particular language

Post by John Little »

As the thread says, is there away to find out how many people are studying each language?

John Little Do mean on Duolingo? If you go to add new course you can see how many people are studying a language.

Do you mean on the forum? If so, I'm afraid there is no way to know exactly how many people are studying a particular language. Some users indicate in their signatures the languages they know or study, but it's not possible to know much more than that.

If you mean on Duolingo you can check this link: www.duolingo.com/courses

Your link lists them in popularity order. Portugues (my course) is relatively and surprisingly low at just over 2 million.

But I have noticed in the league profiles that a large Proprotion of learners are Brasilian

I moved it from the Portuguese forum because it's a general question about Duolingo. Here more people can see the thread and you have a better chance that someone will answer with the information you are looking for. ;)

I bet Portuguese will be gaining popularity in the coming years. It has over 250 million speakers and it's already the most spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere.

Duolingo gives you the number of people who started a course and at least did one lesson. (A course may disappear from your profile after being idle for some weeks.) Doing the placement test keeps you safe as well.

DuoMe lists the learners who attained at least level 2 for any given course they learn. Again, making a successful placement test provides 100XP, hence you get level 2. However DuoMe only retains learners who attained at least once a 100 days streak. Inactive learners and repetitive streak breakers never get listed on DuoMe. Hence the number of active learners is much smaller.

I made a detailed posting on this some time ago. How popular are Duolingo courses really?

I think MatOzone has a link to all the courses Duolingo offers from all the languages, not just from English. That is even more interesting than the Duolingo courses from English.

Those numbers on Duolingo just indicate whoever did a lesson in a language in a month. Doesn't matter how casual!
