Pronunciation of the copula "Is"

Post by Fontanellean »

It's my understanding that the slender pronunciation of "s" is SH, but I also understand that the copula "Is" is pronounced ISS in the three main dialects. Is there a reason it is an exception to the rule? Are there any other words that are pronounced in an overtly irregular way in every dialect?

I don’t know, but I had the same question. Consider this a +1. Thanks for asking it.

‘Is’ is indeed pronounced with a broad s. It is the only word in the Irish language in which s is sounded next to a slender vowel. (Source : Ceachta beaga Gaedhilge book 1)
