Cantonese via Duolingo

Post by panyamnyenyekevu »

If I read this correctly it means that Cantonese has been added to Duolingo’s Chinese version app only. Hopefully it will mean they will add it to the main app as well. In the meantime, I know one can also study Cantonese via the app called Drops.

“ The reintroduced app, according to its official social media post this week, is free to use, teaches 41 languages and comes with gaming features. The most notable update is that it will start teaching Cantonese, the language spoken by people in Hong Kong and Macau, as well as a significant population of the affluent Chinese province of Guangdong and the Chinese diaspora around the world.”

that it will start teaching Cantonese

I think it's quite clear that Cantonese hasn't been published yet. Unfortunately Cantonese will only be available from Chinese (Mandarin) and not from English.

Thank you. If I read the article correctly, it means they have a separate app for people in China to download and this is where they are introducing this.

Yes, that part isn't quite clear for me as well. But since Cantonese is in the incubator I expect it will be available outside of China, too.

Cantonese from Chinese is in "alfa-test" (tested by developers) since december'21.
It seems it will have only 18 skills and 81 lessons.

Let's hope it will be released on Jun 30th 2022:

The release date has recently been updated.
Now it's "August 8th, 2022".

Hopefully we can get the Cantonese owl soon!

So much food in the first few lessons, I'd like to have some. :D
The voices sound good and it's nice to see some traditional characters on Duolingo at last. ;)
However, I would have preferred a Cantonese from English course. :|
And I really don't understand why they call it Chinese (Cantonese) instead of simply calling it Cantonese. :x
