Two translations that I found maintain the rhythm of the original: Two souls, alas, are dwelling in my breast or Two souls, alas, are housed within my breast. (goodreads.com). Faust is torn between his striving for omniscience and his yearning for sensual fulfillment. You are perfectly right by pointing out the function of this quote in everyday life.
