Escaping in Turkish...

Post by David680268 »

Duo wants me to tranlate 'you can escape with me' into Turkish. My answer was

'Benim ile kaçabilirsin.'

But Duo will only accept 'Benimle kaçabilirsin.'

My answer should be accepted, right? I clicked the 'my answer should be accepted' button, hoping that I have not overlooked some mistake. There was no help in the discussion thread.

For the pronouns/determiners that need to be genitive with the instrumental case, you don't have the option to use a separate ile instead. It always needs to be the unified benimle, seninle, etc.

Adding: A couple of refs with more authority than me ;)

Adding again:
(1) I don't think there's as much controversy about this as those comment threads suggest. In grammar texts, I can only find uses like that in the older books. Modern grammars (if they mention it at all) are very clear that this is the rule.
(2) This only applies when ile is the instrumental case. When ile is a conjunction, the rule is different, because there is no unified form when it is a conjunction.

It does not sound natural, but I would give it a pass

Thank you Mustafa. I think I will simply go for the 'fused' form 'benimle' in the future.

Thank you, Danika, very helpful. I think I got it.
