This is a response to the question "Le dije que necesitaba reserva para cenar en La Azul, pero no me creyó."

Why does the response use "queda" not "está"? Is there a difference in meaning?

As a speaker of Castilian Spanish, I would say both expressions mean the same. Perhaps "quedar" expresses more uncertainty than "estar", but in general they can be considered as synonyms. I think it is just a tiny nuance. Also note that "estar" can be used with places and people, while "quedar"can only be used with places.

As a chilean spanish speaker I can confirm!

The most common way to say 'where is x' is saying 'dónde queda x?'

Donde queda el aeropuerto?

Donde queda tu casa?

Donde quedó escondido el tesoro?

Donde quedaron mis calcetines?

And for saying 'how much left on it' the common way is 'cuánto queda?'

Cuanta bencina le queda al auto?

Cuanto me queda en la cuenta del banco?

Cuanta cerveza le queda al vaso?

Cuanta pizza quedó en la caja?
