Members under flags - Multiple Mentions

Post Vlot Vlaams

On pages like these, it would be nice to be able to sort on

  • No. of posts, and
  • Date joined (or better even: date Last Active)
This is possible on the "all members" page...

Also it would be nice if one could click-select and "mention" multiple members associated with a given flag.
Like when searching for a particular pronunciation in Czech, I'd like to "mention" the main Czech contribuing members.

On the "general flags" page, on the very bottom, the list is restricted. One can't open to have a more complete list.
Says "no access". ==> flags

Since Sweden has just under 200 members, it's not listed in one-line the summary, and I can't click on the flag to have all Swedish members.
Just by accident I know a flag is a number, and Sweden is 186 and the numbering is alphabetic.
So it didn't take long to find flags/186
But for another flag? How to get the number more quickly?

Thx

It seems to be a limitation of the NationalFlags extension - it doesn't work with current server settings, but we do need these settings to prevent the bots from reading more than they should. I cannot explain in greater detail, but I'm looking for a solution.

flags - can you see them now?

In order for mentions to work as you expect:

  • anyone can join Swedish or any available group here: ucp.php?i=ucp_groups&mode=membership
  • as long as there's more than one member, others will be able to metion them as @swedish, @french, @Russian, etc.
  • we already have a few groups to start with, we can have as many as we want (as soon as we need them), but group names should be something short and easy to type for most people - probably @dutch instead of @nederlands or @french instead of @français (I suppose relatively few of us would have a proper keyboard layout installed for typing français correctly).

We didn't use this feature before so it probably needs some testing and obviously native speakers need to be aware of it and be willing to join these groups to allow such mentions.

It's a great idea, by the way ;)

Okay. will test and report back.

So just for clarity - the "mention"-group is not the same as the association with the flag itself.
I think it will be useful to draw attention of people (who were willing to be) in the group,
because it's not the same as being pre-subscribed to a specific forum or topic.
Some forums may be out of their initial scope of interest.

That was again a quick implementation, duome, you have beaten DL (that wasn't difficult to beat)
and even READLANG (Steve Redout) in implementation speed. Great.

Who said it ... "best forum ever"... speed is relative, was it Einstein?
or a even brighter mind ... Дми́трий Ива́нович Менделе́ев...

Group != flag - you can choose only one flag, but you can be a member of any number of groups.

Mentions are triggered by the poster regardless of where they post, even if that particular subforum is out of someone's scope of interest - @swedish always triggers a mention of Swedish speakers.

Okay, nice!
Please add the "Dutch" group. (English spelling, with a capital ;-) )

I"ll try inviting all Swedish members of the group ... (so far only 1 = me),
@Swedish
...asking whether they would like to present themselves, and their language learning objectives
or even achieved goals in the "Introduce yourself"
forum... viewtopic.php?t=38812-introduce-yourself

Yes, exactly what I have missed ever since I've chosen the European flag.

I added the Dutch group. By the way, did you get your @Swedish notification?

No, I think it did not come through.
Maybe the "sender" is excluded, and there were no other group members...

Sender should be excluded, otherwise - check your notification settings (allow "someone mentioned me").
