Today II am going to present one of Talkpal's learning modes - the "course mode".
The usual disclaimer up front - Talkpal does not offer grammar lessons. It is a tool for learning vocabulary and phrases and especially for practicing speaking
The course mode consists of sections providing material up to C2.2 level + a number of professional sections for various professional areas (list of courses for which the professional section is available is provided in the next post):
Each section consists of 20 topics and each of them contains three chapters: words, phrases and role plays.
- Words
Word sections end up with a review - match a picture to a word and pair matching, very much like the Duolingo feature:
- Phrases
These are listening exercises:
- Role play
These are the crown exercises. You are given a topic and an introduction:
and then it is your turn to discuss it:
Needless to say the role play is the key exercise for acquiring active knowledge of a language: recalling words and phrases in real time and formulating your own thoughts. It is surprising (or maybe not) to realize that many words that we think we know because we recall them in milliseconds in pair matching or other set exercises - that we actually can't find them when it is time to use them in a conversation.
