Il Napoli, la Juve: Vi siete mai chiesti perché si è soliti riferirsi al femminile quando si parla di Roma, Juventus e Inter, mentre si utilizza l'articolo maschile per Milan, Napoli e Torino? Una regola c'è. Poiché la lingua italiana non utilizza il genere neutro, per attribuire il "sesso" a una squadra basta applicare un semplice dettame, spiegato dall'Accademia della Crusca, la più nota istituzione linguistica italiana:
"Quando la squadra porta lo stesso nome della città di appartenenza - o una sua variante, come nel caso del Genoa - il genere maschile serve a distinguerla dal toponimo, che è normalmente femminile (quindi la magnifica Cagliari = la città; il magnifico Cagliari = la squadra). Il femminile, probabilmente dovuto al sostantivo sottinteso squadra, si adopera con nomi derivati da un aggettivo etnico (la Fiorentina, l'Udinese) e con nomi che non corrispondono a un toponimo (quindi l'Atalanta, la Juventus, la Sampdoria e anche la Lazio, che così si distingue oltretutto dal nome della regione). La principale eccezione, di fronte a una spiegazione del genere, è la Roma".
Quindi i club con un nome in cui è presente il nome di una città saranno di genere maschile: il Milan (termine inglese che sta per "Milano"), il Napoli, il Bayern Monaco, il Manchester United, il Chievo Verona ecc.
Viceversa, i club in cui non è esplicitato il nome di una città saranno di genere femminile: la Juventus, la Sampdoria, la Fiorentina, l'Inter, l'Atalanta ecc.

Ehilà@Chrisinom Davvero, questo è così interessante, non avevo idea del perché alcune squadre fossero maschili e altre femminili. C'è un libro fantastico (in inglese) di Tim Parks ... "A Season with Verona" ...che racconta tutti i nitty gritty del calcio italiano. Vale sicuramente la pena leggerlo.

30 gennaio a Australian Open. Lorenzo Musetti si è dovuto ritirare per infortunio: avrebbe battuto Djokovic facilmente, che peccato per Lorenzo! Quindi oggi tocca a Jannik Sinner sfidare Djokovic, quindi per Jannik, tutto è possibile!

THE OPENING

Way too long and quite boring. This was also due to the fact that athletes entered through several gates at different locations. That made it really confusing. To know how many athletes there were from one country, you had to add numbers yourself—very odd.

They also went well over the planned time. TV stations even had to cut the broadcast because other programs needed to start.

ICE HOCKEY

I remember watching the ice hockey matches from Russia. Czechoslovakia was very strong too, and of course the USA, Canada, Sweden, and Finland.

In 2026: USA gold, CH silver, … bronze, and Sweden out!!

For some strange reason, Norway is not among the top teams—unlike in many other winter disciplines where they are often dominant.

HANDBALL

I found these matches the most spectacular. It’s quite “hard,” but still reasonably fair.

A record was broken by a Danish player, who scored 86 goals in this tournament.

Denmark beat Germany. Germany had performed well throughout the competition. France, the world champions, were eliminated. Portugal was very strong too.

ICE SKATING

Ever since I saw the British couple Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean perform to Boléro by Ravel, I’ve never really watched ice skating again. Nothing can beat that performance in terms of beauty.

An interesting fact: both dancers start kneeling during the intro of the music, performing movements only with their arms and upper body. The reason, as they explained, is that a routine can only last a limited time. Their music and choreography exceeded that limit.

However, the timer only starts when the skates first touch the ice. By starting on their knees, the timer hadn’t begun yet, allowing them to perform the full routine. Clever—and it worked

Once again, a lot of money was spent on new stadiums, bobsleigh tracks, and ski-jumping towers, while facilities from previous Winter Games in Italy could have been reused.

BOYCOTS

Another repeated mistake by the IOC is the exclusion of Russia and Belarus—that is, their Olympic organizations (athletes could still participate as neutrals).

This feels like hypocrisy. If political reasons are used—and they shouldn’t be, since the Olympic Charter states that the Games should remain apolitical and that sport should bring people together—then, by the same logic, countries like China, the USA, or Israel should also have been banned (and probably many others where human rights issues exist).

How can you honestly claim to be “world champion” or “the best in the world” in sports like ice hockey if some of the best individuals and teams are excluded?

PS: In the Paralympics, athletes were allowed to compete under their national flags.

THE SPEECHES

At the end of the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, the two main speakers who formally concluded the event were:

1. Kirsty Coventry – President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who delivered the opening address and welcome speech. She is from Zimbabwe, a former swimmer with many medals.

2. Sergio Mattarella – President of Italy, who officially declared the Games open following Coventry’s remarks.

Both speeches were far too long and rather boring. After a three-hour show, they still felt the need to “welcome” people to Italy and spent several minutes naming and greeting VIPs, statesmen, and presidents.

This felt totally misplaced. It could have been much shorter and placed at the beginning of the ceremony instead.

Even newspapers mentioned it wasn’t the best moment performance by the former ski championne.

Hi Vlot Vlaams, I tend to agree with you about length of speeches etc, not to mention "Bolero", still magnificent and magical. Having been to the ampiteatro in Verona many times I did enjoy "being there" again and gradually caught on to the operatic theme. (I think most ceremonies are too long these days, so much has to be fitted in to keep everyone happy).

In fact I probably enjoyed the Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies more, some of the music n movement was very moving and beautiful.

Well done—on a “clay” court that isn’t actually clay.

The correct term is brique pilée. For the sake of simplification—and a bit of Americanization that strips away some of the nuance/finesse—it’s commonly referred to worldwide as a clay court.

Modern “clay” courts are typically made from crushed, greenish stone, a surface developed in the United States long ago as a cheaper, easier-to-maintain alternative.

I once played on an old-fashioned, poorly maintained “grey clay” court back in 1993—similar to what was once used (though likely in better condition) at Forest Hills, where Jimmy Connors played and won. To me, it felt more like a sandbox than a proper tennis court: no bounce, no pace.

As for Jannik Sinner, he doesn’t fit the stereotype of the “italiano vero,” especially compared to Alcaraz, who both looks and plays like the classic Spanish baseline player we’re used to.

Sinner 's surname is due to the fact that his parents Siglinde and Hanspeter are from Sexten in German speaking South Tyrol, a place I know well because I regularly went there skiing with my parents in the winter holidays. In his youth, he was an active skier and won the Italian giant slalom championship in 2008 and finished as runner-up in 2012.
