Cooking carrots

Post by John Little »

Very off topic but,in the "Made In" thread, @HeyMarlana mentioned looking for cast iron cooking pots. I warned against boiling carrots in them because,in our experience, they turn the carrots black. But @HeyMarlana has never boiled a carrot and usually sautés them.

So, is boiling carrots only a British thing? I did do honey roasted carrots and parsnips in the air fryer at christmas but its far more common for us to boil them.

Edit. The only cast iron pan we kept, was the frying pan which is now very well seasoned. That did make me consider trying to fry carrot chips (USA "fries")

We also boil the carrots but found that parsnips and carrots, not to mention sweet potatoes, diced and popped into the airfryer, are delicious. A salmon slice af'd on top of the diced veg is delicious.

Does cooking in the air fryer make them chips? (Or fries) Or are they technically roasted?

In Germany, it is very common to boil carrots.

But since I don't like boiled carrots – I only like them raw in salads– I didn't know what effect this could have on a cooking pot.
Now I have one more reason not to boil them.

Here , we either boil or steam ( healthier to keep the vitamins in a vegetable ) things like green beans , broccoli, potatoes , asparagus.
🥔 Potatoes we usually boil.

*Never boiled a carrot by itself. Cooked carrots 🥕, pot roasts and stews or soups.

Steaming : https://www.marthastewart.com/how-to-us ... et-8643130

May take longer , so if in a hurry , by all means boil.

  • You can also steam in a microwave with water*

Thinking the air fryer does everything. ( as mentioned above.) Interested in that , as well.

"Does cooking in the air fryer make them chips? (Or fries) Or are they technically roasted?" John, I think technically they're roasted. Sweet potatoes-sliced 14mins at 200, then add parboiled carrots at say 185, then fish for the last 6/7 minutes. 👌

Right...ok....I have pondered on this and have to ask, if not in a pot or pan, how do you boil your carrots?

:)

...how do you boil your carrots?

In a stainless steel pot.
Either a full boil with a pinch of salt, cooked until tender, then drain and glazed with a bit of butter, or drain and add dill. However, if I'm sautéing, I'll do a half-boil in a pot first because I know they'll soften more while sautéing. The only time I don't boil in a pot is if I'm using a wok, but my wok is a non-stick steel. (And I hardly ever use the wok to invest in something like cast iron.)

Right......This morning I experimented with carrot hash browns. I grated carrot and onion and mixed it with a little flour, patted it into squares and fried them. And it didnt work. It was just a carroty onion mush. So I'm not convinced carrot chips (fries) would work either :(

There are bags of "chips" sold in stores here called Veggie Crisps. I think some bags include carrots. So, somehow, someway, they're being manufactured the same way as chips/crisps for snacking.

I'm not a chip-eater, but when I do feel like having any, I prefer gold ol' potato chips. Plain, just a bit salted. No need for snazzy flavours.
