Ja juuri siinä onkin avain minkä tahansa kielen oppimiseen:
heittäydy keskelle kieltä, todelliseen ja elävään ympäristöön, ja kuuntele, mitä sanotaan. Huomaamattasi alat toistaa sanoja ja ilmauksia sellaisina kuin kuulet ne.
Ei tarvita kielioppia, ei sovelluksia, ei tietokoneita eikä tekoälyä – vain aitoa, puhuttua kieltä oikeassa elämässä.

Put Your Head on My Shoulder (Pääsi rinnallein painuu)

Many people – especially those who follow the annual Eurovision Song Contest ESC – think that Finnish music is (and that it has to be) rough and untamed metal, as if made by cavemen.

But here is an exception: a soft, calm song that sounds very good. This may feel surprising when one takes into account how many hard consonants the Finnish language has – for example the numerous double consonants, such as kk.

Of course, it helps that the melody is familiar to many beforehand.

When we hear this song, we cannot help unintentionally singing in our minds:
“put your lips round my shoulder”
(if the joke has to be explained, it is a mixture of the real lyric “put your lips next to mine” and the title of the song).

When I was in Helsinki, I was helped a lot by the fact that many public texts were bilingual, in Swedish and Finnish.
Although this was before I started studying Swedish, I was still able to understand a surprising amount of them.

This awakened my curiosity: why does Finnish sound so familiar to Flemish speakers?
Even my wife – she does not study the language with me – seems to understand most of what I mean when I practice at home.
Of course, the context also helps a lot.

And in fact, isn't that the key to learning any language!
Throw yourself into the middle of the language, into a real and living environment, and listen to what is being said.
Without noticing it, you begin to repeat words and expressions just as you hear them.
No grammar is needed, no apps, no computers, no AI – just genuine spoken communication in the real world.
