I'm sure you're right that it was sarcastic.
Which reminds me, better go do at least one lesson so I don't waste another streak freeze.

You can collect another +5 free energy by watching an ad (but why would I bother?![]()
Or you can pay 500 gems to recharge.
Ive been looking at that and all I can see is an offer of a free trial of Super. You get one free energy point every hour anyway. And a full recharge for me (if I did ever consider it) is still only 350 provided its before the start of a lesson

Maybe you have a different OS? What about the desktop version?
It's an AB test, and they're not going to test someone who doesn't do a lot of lessons. They're looking at the people who might or will do a lot of lessons, and trying to gauge the negative impact that their energy system has so they can make adjustments.

Probably they are also testing it with people who formerly did a lot of lessons on Duolingo but not now.
I also got it.
Now I changed from two lessons daily to three.
Native / using
/ learning
/ once learnt
/ trying to understand at least a bit
I don't do a lot of lessons, maybe 1-3 a day most days and I forget some days or remember when it's already after midnight, so too late to get credit for that day.
I get the option for +5 free energy every 4 hours and then I can watch an ad for another +5 free energy.
I don't have enough gems to spend 500 of them every time I run out of energy, right now I have 1253 and I'm saving them for when I need to buy a streak freeze, as I miss the time to do a lesson frequently, partly because I stay up late and often forget that I didn't do a lesson today till it's tomorrow.
It seems that the +free energy amount varies a lot. JudieLC gets +5, I have never gotten that much, I only get +4 and lately only +2, not sure why. Mine also used to be every 4 hrs but now it seems longer. On my computer I have hearts still so not a problem. However on my tablet I get energy and that just seems to be at the whim of DL how it works. So, when I need to get 3 lessons done so I can meet one of the 3 goals for the day, I usually do one in the morning, then if I can one later in the day and finally the last one before bedtime. Often however, I will do one on my tablet and then switch over to the computer to get two more done. Life was so much easier when I only had my computer and I only did one lesson per day because that's all I wanted to do. Now I push to get at least 3 done each day so maybe the goals have been a motivator of sorts, but the energy, not so much.
It remembers me strongly of the hearts, which renew every 6 hours, too. Renewing
Just to clarify, this button for five free energy every four hours is in addition to the 1 energy that's added on every forty-two or so minutes. It's extra energy beyond the normal replacement schedule.
Probably the equivalent with hearts is when you to do the general practice lesson which tests eight vocabulary words from three to five units across the course for an extra heart.
If you didn't get the button to practice for hearts and you didn't have the full compliment of five hearts, you could always go in through the backdoor to replenish them:
