Well it was new to me. But a quick google says it does exist but only for special people who "are an employee of duolingo or have a special connection to Duolingo"

You can't get a general "verified" badge like on social media; instead, verification on Duolingo usually means confirming your email or taking the Duolingo English Test (DET) with photo ID, while special profile badges (like for employees or language creators) are by invitation only. For basic account use, verify your email in Settings; for official language certification, complete the DET with a passport or government ID for verified test results.

Gentlemen please, there is no need to initiate a quarrel because of this. I'm glad that the OP has already found the answer. Let us turn the page and move on, okay?

I think it was a language problem. I got the impression that no-one (except possibly myself) were natural English speakers but everyone was doing quite well writing in English but not well enough to avoid misunderstandings.
