I'm probably wrong, but my first instinctive reply on seeing that without an object pronoun is "My left leg hurts what?". It doesn't help that I'm not sure whether the 'la pierna izquierda' in Duo's preferred sentence is a subject (making it literally 'the left leg hurts me when I walk like this'), or an object with the 'me' as a possessive dative (making it something like 'When I walk like this, it hurts my left leg').
