Just to point one thing out: This thread doesn't consider any shenanigans or fraudulent operations to skew the outcome or the classification.

My key example: What happens when Duolingo assigns an Android user to a league filled with website users? I have removed all league nicknames but my own. The below result is on Tuesday at noon (UTC). The top Android user scores 5816 XP. Only one website user surpassses 10% of that total.

The DuoMe raw data of the first user shows the usual XP farming: a sequence of 60XP legendary repeats or tests, during a triple XP interval. That makes 6 times 180 XP + once 60 XP after the triple ran out. Several hours later a few lessons or repeats were added to complete the daily quests. Now a series of 120 XP events (again triple XP) follow. After triple time ran out, the user completed a few useful ordinary lessons at 20 XP. Note that this user has no SUPER subscription!

What happens when DL assigns one website user to a league with Android app users is also obvious: the user will be demoted, no matter his effort.

I agree. There is no triple-XP-Booster in the web, afaik. At least not for me, hehe. The usual inconsistencies of DL.

On Sunday evening of that week, I have taken notice of the league situation before it ended. (User 1 to 20 bottom to top as usual.)

The horizontal axis is logarithmic to distort less the 12801 XP the first user ended up with. Given the 5816 on Tuesday at noon, she 'slowed down' since there was no real competition. If you get landed in a such league, it is tempting to really get learning true lessons and abandon XP farming.

I am now in a league with several users practicing chess, maths or music. I am using the DL website.
When I open the TAB for adding a new course from English, maths and music show up with the mention: only available on Iphone and Android. Chess doesn't even show (I have a are better chess program than that of Duolingo).

Concluding: the league is mixed; both app users and website users are included. I still have hearts, app users are limited by 'energy', but they have a lot of features boosting their XP farming ... if only they have a SUPER or MAX subscription.

Website users no longer have stories added along section 4 units (unless that's another A/B experiment).

Finally it happened.

DL staff disabled the two League challenges in my very old Android app version:

• Lightning round
• The 8/16/...32/40 XP level up game (can't remember its name right now) over three level rows

It was gone for a days at the end of the weekend.
And they didn't come back on the mobile app in the next week when a lesson was manually started.

The two were fun as they gave you a mixture of free typing and word bank exercises.
Many times full sentences were given which didn't make them completely useless.

The next app version (older one) already introduced this lame word bank matching exercise as a challenge.
I found it pretty useless when you don't start with a language from scratch.
I'm more used to train the recognition or the recalling.

These other two challenges were kinda OK to quickly save a streak, to do some review of a completed PT course or to hang onto the A1 section in French for a bit longer.

Now only the real lessons are left on the path UI and they take much longer to finish.

It will be nearly impossible to keep me over place 15 without them in a League.

Well, everything which makes or made fun gets destroyed by Duolingo Inc.
I really didn't expect this that they can influence their app or server code that much...

The newer three *** star timed exercises were differently designed, not to complete them, having to buy timer extends.

What's next? A broken login? Failed path sync? Forced energy?

The merging of website and app users in a single league looks quite ugly. The demotion threshold got over 4000; I could barely hold on like quite a few others, since positions 7-16 were well below 5000. One user with a 100+ weeks diamond league streak abandoned the struggle, doing only one or two lessons a day.

If this rat race continues during the next league, I am seriously considering going private. Gone leagues, gone also friend streaks and friend quests (sorry friends).

Usually it is enough to use your streak freezes, leave out the Monday and continue Tuesdays. Sometimes one is unlucky and gets a bunch of addicted users, too. But usually it helps. As I am always using the web, I had always app users within my league. One could see it from that triple-XP-boost they got. So, this is nothing new for me. It helped me to see all the leagues - and cheaters - more relaxed, and focus on my learning.
