Pronunciation guide during lessons

Post by Baaaasil »

I have been learning Korean for few months now but I don't see the option of seeing pronunciation.
You know the romanised hints you can get for pronunciation , I don't have the option to turn it on.
This problem is only with my korean course and not other languages. Can this be solved?

I believe it is so on purpose. Hangeul is a phonetical alphabet and even though it looks scary at the first glance it is easy to learn. Once you have learned it there is no reason to romanise it - in a long run it would prove more harmful then useful. It really makes sense to spend a few extra hours in the beginning to master reading and writing hangeul. Imagine being in South Korea and seeing something like this:

This is the reality - you won't find much written in Latin alphabet.

once you learn Hangeul you will be able to figure out that the second and third line are actually English words: "service center". This is when the fun begins when you start being able to read real contents and you discover a lot of English hidden behind the "hieroglyphs".

Thanks for reply. Yes, got the point. It was on my mind because my other courses had pronounciation guide. Btw I was able to read the sign " Car service centre" so yes the lessons are showing results 🙂

That's fantastic! To complete the story the first line is a Chinese word (no genuine Korean words here!) meaning "car":

自動車 (see here: viewtopic.php?p=103944)

Good luck with your study!
