Something that has been on my mind that I finally want to ask about.

The s:es in the tu forms seem to not be pronounced, at least in some dialects

Could you elaborate on this?

A good example of this is the song efecto by bad bunny

Dime qué me hiciste, qué droga me diste

Except it sounds like:

Diiime, qué me shiiiiite, qué droga me diiiite

Interesting is that hiciste does not sound like hiciste either

At one point before the Duolingo forums disappeared, one of the native Spanish speakers explained that the eses are not completely silent, but are “aspirated”. That is, the tip of the tongue stays behind the bottom teeth rather than raising to the top teeth to produce a sibilant S.

I haven’t researched it more, but I’m sure you can find more and better explanations on the ’net.

I think it’s crazy. None of the courses, none of the apps prepare you for this. No wonder I understand zero when I hear natives speak. Up to know, I was like, am I having a hearing problem? Are my ears OK? LoL

Me temo que no existe ningún curso o aplicación que te prepare para entender las diferencias dialectales. A mí me pasa algo parecido con el alemán. Compré un libro para estudiar alemán suizo, todo muy bonito y tal, pero luego al escuchar no me enteraba de nada. Lo único que puedes hacer si te interesa una variedad concreta es ver mucho contenido original y hablar con nativos.
