Please check this example of a long Polish number

Post by Davey944676 »

"dziewięćset dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć tysięcy dziewięćset dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć"

Is this the "normal" long Polish way to say "nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine"?

i.e. with no commas anywhere?

Sometimes I think I have just about got a grip on Polish numbers, and then I'll see a different construction written somewhere, and I'm never quite sure what is correct. Cheers! :)

We were all happy when the year 2.000 arrived, hahahah!

Changed from (take air) rok tysiąc dziewięćset dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć to rok dwa tysiące.

Actually, you're almost correct. Years need liczebniki porządkowe.

1999  2000  2001
rok tysiąc dziewięćset dziewięćdziesiąty dziewiąty  rok dwutysięczny  rok dwa tysiące pierwszy

TLDR; detailed grammar rules + common mistakes

  • Thousands of years don't change their form (exceptions are those ending with 0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣: rok tysięczny, dwutysięczny etc.),

  • hundreds of years usually don't change forms either (exceptions are 0️⃣0️⃣: rok setny, dwusetny, tysiąc dziewięćsetny etc.),

  • tens (1️⃣➖9️⃣9️⃣) always need to change their forms (rok tysiąc dziewięćset pierwszy, tysiąc dziewięćset jedenasty, dwa tysiące drugi, dwa tysiące dwudziesty drugi etc.)

It's one of the most common grammar mistakes made by native Polish speakers, you can hear and see the incorrect forms everywhere, even in newspapers and TV.

For example, Happy New Year 2023 should be Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku Dwa Tysiące Dwudziestego Trzeciego, but there will surely be some people saying Dwutysięcznego Dwudziestego Trzeciego (though this mistake was the most common with years 2001-2020 <maybe they sounded too short?>)
