It's a conjunction, something that links the subordinate clause to the main clause. The English equivalent would be that, but unlike in English where you can use or omit it in Spanish it's required.

@antonmo There's a question concerning que at the end of the main post, difficult to spot because of the formatting.
@Cifi The que here is considered a relative pronoun in Spanish grammar, not a conjunction, because it stands in as the direct object of the subordinate clause. Other than that, your explanation is correct, it serves as the link between the clauses and is not optional.
