Most embarrassing ....typo's

Post by Basler Biker »

I just had this one

  • feces instead of faces
    or (not real)
  • good *uck instead of the usual
or as in this official audio-generated subtitles from the BBC on a funeral with QE II present
  • someone was said to be "controlling the Queen" / instead of "condoling with the Queen"
  • pubic awareness instead of public
  • holey spirit instead of Holy spirit
  • good mourning instead of morning (unless you play the "champetter" in Allo Allo ;-)

Most of my typo's are because my left hand seems just a bit faster than my right hand
So letters are at times swapped, as in scared instead of sacred.
Or if my spacebar refuses - the rapist instead of therapist

Other embarrassing thing in german, hmmm german, last try German is that my left-shift is broken,
or my "pink" not strong enough .. I know, it's a crime.

My keyboard almost died (it did it there! - I typed "does"!) the opposite. Changing words on a whim. I've lost many hearts on Duolingo due to my keyboard making assumptions about my meanings.

Funny you see it that way, but it was simply my error, some languages do 's, others do -s
So I am just mixing them up.
And even so, it isn't a typo, it's a grammar error...

Because isn't very bad, the way DL "tells" us (without any further explanation) that there seems to be a typo, while in fact it is a grammar error, like one or other suffix that needs to be added, but you select the wrong one ...it says "you have a typo" where in fact it's a grammar/conjugation/case/gender/inflection/declension error ...

Swedish: jag har ett barn (is okay) // jag har en barn (gender error) //
==> jag har et barn (typo - should be "ett")
==> jag har enn barn (typo ?? gender ??)
Also very BAD is that DL only mentions one error at a time!!

Don't read further if you don't like AI...

I constantly hear people complaining about autocorrect changing their desired words to something else but I've never understood that problem, for me it's always an issue on the user side that they don't know how to set it so it wouldn't autocorrect
like at least on Gboard you can just add the words to your dictionary and they won't be autocorrected anymore

also it could be because I just use the swipe function so I don't actually type on mobile devices 8-)

How do you deal with typing/swiping in more than one language in one text so that you are not autocorrected from one language into another?

That is one important question, and I would like to know the anwer, too.

My not-so-smart phone "knows" that I have four input languages installed. (BTW, four is the limit on my phone, which I find very discriminatory towards polyglots). I can easily switch from one language to another, but the artificial un-intelligence struggles to keep up with all the dictionnaries installed, and the autocorrect blends different languages. For example, when I type in Polish, it keeps changing "i" (that means "and" in Polish) to capital "I" (which in Polish makes no sense). It also often adds diacritics when I type in English, thus correcting random words to French, like "diner" autocorrected to "dîner." To make things worse, if I write a message in one language, and then abandon the app to, say, check something on Google, when I come back to the message, my definitely-not-smart-phone switches the language on me. Aaaargh!

well I just start swiping words in one language and it knows that I'm writing in that language 🤷🏽‍♀️ like tbh I don't even understand what the problem is, if you have multilingual typing on you can just start typing or swiping in one language and it's smart enough to know that you're typing English instead of French for example
this might be exclusively a typers' problem because when you're swiping you don't even need autocorrect because you can't swipe a misspelling ;)

are you using gboard or some other keyboard? because that definitely doesn't sound like normal gboard behavior 😬

The latest gboard lets you choose two languages in addition to every primary language, so when you have English selected, it will also recognize swiping in Spanish and French, and when you select French you can have something else, like Italian and Potuguese, as your "secondary" languages. But it doesn't let me choose different scripts, like English+Russian - I would have to switch languges before swiping or typing anything in Russian.

Good point. One can define such triplets for each configured language (that uses Latin alphabet).

gboard EN DE FR.png
gboard EN DE FR.png (102.07 KiB) Viewed 398 times

I have noticed that my triplets were not optimized for languages I use or toggle between. Sorting this out should fix most of the problems.

I just checked and I am using Gboard. And Ive checked the settings and turned off auto correct.

On gboard there are four black squares above the keyboard, hit those and one of the options is to "Share gboard"

There is a gboard setting in the autocorrect section called "block obscene words" or something like that. It is on by default. Try to turn it off and see what happens...

don't quite understand the question, if you can combine languages with a Latin script why couldn't you do the same for
ones with the Cyrillic script?

well, exactly, that I was wondering... there can't be technical reasons, let's just hope that apps are not susceptible to political situations ... that would be bad. But in vain, because aren't they already, when they are made unavailable in some regions, countries or continents ;-) it's very bad.

thank you @Basler Biker, @LICA98, @PtolemysXX.

I don't use Gboard, as it's not privacy-friendly(and keyboard and browsers are two critical things that must be privacy oriented, or so I believe, since they can reveal almost everything about a person).

i instead use Heliboard, an open source keyboard built on top of AOSP(Android Open Source Project) keyboard.
The Glide typing(swipe) functionality requires a proprietary library that isn't open source. Google trains on user-data to refine it. So, i have to make do with home-made solutions that aren't as precise(nobody can match billion-hours of user data).

though thanks to those solutions, I've given up typing most of the time. I can use a local speech-to-text model(whisper from OpenAI) instead of relying on Gboard's voice typing that sends voice to Google's servers. it's not perfect but works good for me.

though to non-technical users, i can recommend FUTO keyboard which has all of this functionality baked in, is open source, and supported by louis rossmann, a guy that is famous for advocating for right-to-repair.

more about FUTO keyboard from louis rossmann here:

also, i have the keyboard customised to extreme, having things like undo, redo, select all, going incognito(so the keyboard doesnt remember words for that time, etc.). this is something Gboard lacks.

one reason could be that Cyrillic languages all have slightly different alphabets, like the ones that use the Latin script just have the letters A-Z and then any of the extra letters are just added by adding a diacritic to the letter whereas in Cyrillic you actually have different letters
btw for example for Vietnamese you also can't add multilingual typing even tho they use the Latin script 😬

for me it's the opposite the keyboard being connected to the internet and therefore having the text suggestions is very important  also gboard has undo and redo as well as select all

but I just use the swipe from backspace function instead it's much simpler :)

@LICA98, oh i didn't know gboard implemented undo, redo. glad they're catching up. btw, next word suggestions don't(and shouldn't) require Internet. that is local. but google likely shares what you selected and other metadata time to time, which is what i was referring to.

@buho but without internet how do they know what words to suggest in the first place? afaik the words people use the most are suggested and that's why they need to share the data
