Make a sentence (challenge)

Post by Basler Biker »

who, what, when, where, why, and how ... are 6 words to start a question.
But can you make a single sentence, not a question, grammatically correct, and using these 6 words only once, and not needing comma's or whatever separator... ?

Some song lyrics may set you in the right direction....

Challenge accepted:

I can tell you what I felt when I came here and discovered this place where people who are very smart showed me why learning languages is so important to understand how diverse the world is.

Does it make any sense? :D

Now that I think about it... a sentence like that would be impossible in German. You need to put a comma to separate each subordinate clause 🤔

In German you could make it even more difficult, forget about the commas, but include also womit, woruber, wohin, u.s.w. ... many more single-word question words...

genau, ... warum haben wir schon ... but I don't see your suggested solution ;-) either in English or German or ...

Can you form a meaningful single German sentence, grammatically correct, in which the same word appears six times in a row?

that seems quite a challenge indeed... "Nein, ich habe keine Ahnung, was es sein könnte.".

Here's the solution: Wenn hinter Fliegen Fliegen fliegen, fliegen Fliegen Fliegen nach. For @MoniqueMaRie : For some Germans it also works for "Griechen" instead of "Fliegen"...

Right.
In the region where I come from it works with "griechen" :D

Wenn hinter griechen griechen kriechen, kriechen griechen griechen nach.
That's 4x Griechen, and the verb seems to be "kriechen".
Is "griechen" a verb? I only found kriechen (to creep)

There are some German dialects that pronounce p, t, k like b, d, g. So they say griechen and not kriechen.

Not sure this would qualify but I am sure one of my students would do the following sentence:

Who and what plus where and when also why are question words but how gives the reason.

As a teacher that would be correct and also be following the directions. I would accept this answer. LOL

disqualified ;-) ... syntax probably correct, but not the semantics...
"how" gives the method/manner, "Why" gives the reason ;-)

That was the original idea, all in one sentence,
but it was not said that they should stand all one after another.

BB:

Your directions then were not very clear...at least I wasn't sure of the meaning of what you wanted. Also why can be a reason but it is clearly a question word and that is what I meant. The 5 "w"s are all questions however the HOW is not a question rather it gives a reason or method which makes it different from the "w" words. I hope that makes sense. And if I wanted to be really picky then why is actually asking the reason to which the person would reply. I hope that clarifies things...LOL

Alright. A re-do then.

I don't know why but when I listen to The Who it makes me wonder how they didn't get hypnotized by "Won't Get Fooled Again" when the synthesizer can take you to a place where you could be in a trance.

Very nice - Excellent - chapeau ! respect !

(I'll be leaving this "presence" soon now, with deep bows, whilst I creep backward, till through the door I vanish, lost to shame, to disappear forever in humiliation and humbleness)

Or as Shakespeare might have said—did he?—or was it Blackadder? (no, Blackadder, of course, was never humble—just a stumbler and mumbler.)
