Anyone else miss the old proper stories?

Post by John Little »

On the old tree format, stories were in a separate section that you could dip in to as you felt like it. Once you reached the necessary level, there were a lot more to choose from and the stories towards the end were "proper" stories, some with multiple parts.

And, every so often, new stories were introduced, stretching your learning to new levels. For a while, the story archive was available on a link provided by EranBarlev ( thank you) but duolingo has now blocked the links to these gems. What a shame! I wonder if they are still on the web anywhere or have they gone to the deleted file heaven in the ether.

Just case you don't know, but I am sure you do ;-) the DL stories were "remastered" here. And you need no level to access them all.

A lot of those are the regular stories on the path. I was looking for the old proper stories like the Time Machine and The Pixies, both of which had five parts. Or even the one about the trainee forest ranger or "Follow the Arrows".

They were all available via the link that EraBarlev posted a while back which no longer works.

What operating system are you using?

I am on a windows computer, and using Google.

Perhaps if you have access by another platform, it may work differently ?

i.e. if you are using it through the app, for the operating systems of Android or Apple iOS ?
Or a different browser ?

I just clicked your link via the chrome browser on my regular android phone that I'm using to read this.

Edit: That 's interesting. Opera opens the story but neither Firefox, Google or chrome does and bing and duckduckgo try to but just hang.

Edit: as does Edge and vivaldi ( just downloaded)

OK. Just tried it in Opera (the only browser that worked) and got no sound. But I did get this :-

Edit: just noticed the muted sound.

ahhh no - thanks for the offer of a loan.
In a very brief look at sentences it was one I randomly choose.

Now I'm glad I did - as your offer gave me a laugh.

It is an interesting problem that often these calls on the Duolingo system will not work through certain browsers.
I don't know what to do about this, but I like to assume it is good to be aware - people experience different access - based on what browser they use.
While Duolingo itself continues to test different versions of courses anyone of us will have access to.

Possibly as it tries to work developing "individually designed courses" (?)

All these Urls from the table @daKanga has posted starting with "Follow the arrows" do work for me on Firefox Nightly, Chrome Dev on Android 11 / MIUI 12.5.7 stable.

You might want to try Kiwi, Yandex Alpha on Android (both support full Chrome extensions).

Or download the APK file from Iceweasel (GitHub repository) to expand the collection_id.

Note: The normal Firefox stable release channel is worthless on Android since the Fenix rewrite.

A good idea might be to clear all duolingo.com cookies and then to relogin (with your password which you must remember as the jsession_id cookie will be deleted too)!
But the new browsers (new profile) didn't fix it for ya.

John Little wrote: Fri Jan 10, 2025 8:51 pm

Chrome...

Opera opens the story but neither Firefox, Google or Chrome does and Bing and Duckduckgo try to but just hang.

Edit: as does Edge and Vivaldi ( just downloaded)

What version of Chrome?
Chrome Dev V133.0.x build is able to open them here too.

Are you sure the installed Duolingo app isn't intercepting the calls to the /stories Url?

Well, sounds more like your account is not allowed to directly open the /stories link when you're getting redirected???
But all the other normal path stories do work for you?

I had the same issue for 1-2 years with the /practice-hub and /practice-hub/stories Urls when they took it away from me.
Was only getting redirected to the /learn page.

Can you access it?

I'm not very sure what's going on.
Have you refreshed the Duolingo.com page before?
I had no issue after switching from FR to PT.

But I first connected to duolingo.com to make their server refresh the ACTIVE course (no big deal on your side as you're only using the Portuguese course).
AFAIK it's not necessary to have Duolingo.com open in the first tab...but it shouldn't hurt either.

So...only Opera is working for you.
Sorry to hear that.

My account is set only to Portuguese on all browsers.

Reading this (but I may be wrong) it seems you set PT to browsers and browser account ;-)
That's not important at all. Not the language of your browsers. Not the regional settings either.

Don't over-complicate. The only thing that counts is to set your LEARNING LANGUAGE in DL to Portuguese.
I just tested here : It works here with all browsers possible, all those mentioned earlier. Also MS's edge.

If your DL language is not PT, then you'll be diverted to anything else you were doing before in DL

If you are diverted by DL to something else than the story, you have to look at what DL does, outside of what the browser knows... and we all know DL has been badly programmed to handle "sessions" (and the session relevant parameters) on devices ...

So what does DL need? it may be cookies, login keys (remember me settings) on your device, or cache.
Those 3 are indeed all browser dependent.

Added: also look at ad-Blockers - they can inhibit the playing of sound/video, as they disable the pre-load and the auto-play modes in the browser (again browser dependent)

BB - Basler Biker - Positivity and constructiveness will prevail.
Either you win or you learn, but you never lose. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

duome also has recently been able to provide a resource where you can access a version of Duolingo stories, including stories that are not longer in a current course.

Through, for example Portugese for English speakers at : https://duome.eu/stories/en/pt

It also has audio - as well as questions that are posed.

And if you come across new stories provided by Duolingo, or wish to add old Duolingo stories to this resource you can also do that.

Unfortunately for me - it is about 1am in the morning - and I don't have the head space to do that at the moment - to explain how to do this.

However it has enabled me to be part of having listed 580 Duolingo produced stories for French for English speakers. re :
https://duome.eu/stories/en

Others can also be part of this - to increase the number of stories available through this resource.
Though it is limited to stories that Duolingo has produced, and are accessible on the Duolingo platform.
It stands to a degree separate from Duolingo, though it uses Duolingo resources.
It does not require you to set your Duolingo course to the target and source language for it to be available for you to access.

And importantly - by the audio links 🔊 you are able to access the sentences as they are spoken by people - not synthesized. And spoken with expression relevant to the story.
What a valuable resource !

The duome.eu story system auto-updates whenever someone accesses a particular story.

To add a story, you need to make a "call" to the duome.eu system using an example of the story's URL. For example, French (fr) speakers learning English (en) would "usually" use:

https://duome.eu/story/en-fr- followed by the story's name in the target language, with spaces replaced by hyphens.

For instance:

Code: Select all

https://duome.eu/story/en-fr-doctor-eddy

Though this is not the case for the above example, if this story had not been added to the duome.eu resource, it would then be added. There are though at times some differences to this standard for some stories.

Guidelines for URLs:

  • Usually avoid punctuation marks like ? , ! or commas, etc.
  • Usually use basic Roman characters without accents or diacritical marks (though exceptions exist).
  • Additional variable details might appear at the end of some URLs.

I plan to share more examples and explanations in future posts to show different explanations and more information that may be of value to some of us.

Thank you for your patience as I refine this process. Hopefully, we can collectively contribute to expanding this resource.

Feedback and alternative explanations are welcome! Different perspectives are more relevant to reach a wider audience.

For possible 2 letter country codes for for different Duoling languages, some hints may be located at :
viewtopic.php?p=4494-flags-for-language ... odes#p4494
Or better still - check out what patterns are used in the current https://duome.eu/stories

OHHHHH!!!!
WOW!!!!
This is VERY exciting for me, and it might be for you too! 🎉

If you use this link:
Duolingo Stories Practice Hub

You can access "Your Library" of Duolingo stories - within the Duolingo system.

These are stories you’ve already read, all within the Duolingo system. The best part? Completing a story here counts toward your streak and points! (At least, that's been my experience so far.)

Additionally, this link, if you note the link address, and type it in - in a specific way, it will add it to the Duome's Duolingo Stories : https://duome.eu/stories resource.

Happy learning! 😊

I'm okay with dancing in the rain.
It is something I am very familiar with.

Yes - in further investigation on my behalf - it only gives you access to Duolingo stories that are "current" / normally available in the whatever the recent course offering is - that changes without notice .... .

And it does NOT give you access to the "retired" ones.

Thanks for also confirming this.

Sadly for me.

Sorry for initially not being in front of this reality when, for me, I discovered this sad reality.

Though - by doing the "call" to the duolingo resource, if you know the "call / key", you can access past / "retired" stories.

And have them "play" in the Duolingo system.
And when you play/activate them by the URL call - it seems to award you whatever the Duolingo point system is.
That is something I have never been able to work out - that point system.
And it is to also due to the fact - that I don't care about whatever the "changing" point system is. It is not why I am here.

The first part of the url call is :

https://www.duolingo.com/stories/

Followed by specific story call - for example to use the individual Duolingo story call - as is replicated by duome.eu, with what it has created to mirror the Duolingo resource.

Being the last section of the URL call in to : https://duome.eu/story/....

I hope at least for some - this may be of assistance.
