Time to study

Post by blackbird7 »

On numerous occasions, I complete one or two lessons within or less than the "Spend ## minutes learning" benchmark. When attempting to complete the next session, I run out of hearts and choose to end the session. All the time spent in that lesson IS NOT CREDITED to the "Spend ## minutes learning" benchmark and thus I do not receive the allotment of hearts for completing that benchmark. It isn't right that I'm not receiving credit for the time spent learning during that failed session. I suggest an update to add this time spent to the benchmark during a failed session and add the designated allotment of hearts.

We are not duolingo! ;)

Nor anyone from duolingo (as far as it seems) is a member of this forum, and even if someone were to be a participant here, it would be very unlikely that they would take our suggestions into account (LOL! Wishful thinking!).

OP: Try your luck and contact the support of Duolingo [(Not of duome!!!) We're not... you know what.] or via social media. Latter seems to get the most responses. Good luck! (Not much hope.)

I would not bet on that. Since the time I mentioned once that I get a 3-day-free-trial for Duolingo super every 50 days of my streak (50, 100, 150...) and I only then do legendary, without wasting gems, it stopped. [insert paranoid smiley here] Maybe it's a coincidence, I've fallen out of the A/B tests, who knows, but it occured on some other things we spoke about, too. Workarounds, scripts ...
Maybe, maybe not... However, I think, they will at least read here, now and then. And if it's just to make sure, that we're not working against them, like they demanded.

But, of course, you're right that they will not care about complaints made here. They even don't care about the most complaints the support gets, so why should they act here different?

@ blackbird7 ,

Try filling out a bug report. ( Duolingo ) Sometimes , if they aren’t busy , they will try and help..

They did help me once , in a big way , when I could not sign in for days to keep my streak . Very thankful for it , too.
🙂
Do you know how to find that ?

Edit : Oops , was apparently typing at the same time as the person above.
Yes, follow that advice that was given…

They seem to only count the time of completed lessons. When I have the timed ones, I just leave the last question open for a while, and get the "way to power through, you spent 8 minutes on this lesson".... No I didn't . I just didn't complete it all at once, because you give me weird points for playing it that way,.

I miss the very very old days of no stupid groups of competition, no hearts, no timed anything, just learning for learning sake and all the other distractions were missing. Ahhh, for the good ol' days. LOL

Suggestion, don't waste time on timed lessons, buy hearts and just learn. My best increase came when I gave myself an attainable goal, 1 lesson per day. My streak is pretty good and I am making progress at my own pace without the distractions of all the gamification that duo put on the site. I am not rushing things, rather slow and steady works for me.

Find your own style and pace and then stick to it. Set your own goal, what is the end game??? Right now my end game has changed and my focus is back on learning Chinese with the intent of taking an HSK exam early next year. I do minimum of one lesson in Yiddish each day and one in Chinese, but when time permits I do more now in Chinese.

I find when you set personal goals, you will usually do your best to reach them. Set realistic ones! That's the best advice I can offer.

That seems to work by now only for a limited time pause. I did the same some weeks ago, with starting one lesson and then coming back after 1 hour or so. For a couple of days it worked, but not anymore, since 3, 4 weeks? or so. Even 15 minutes pause seemed to much for counting it. For further investigation I was too lazy, I must admit. ;)

I suggest a more direct, personal approach to expressing concern about study-time inaccuracies. The founders, top managers and directors of Duolingo are identified on their website. Their corporate mailing address and their corporate email addresses are trivial to research. When I ventured to publish a satire of Duolingo, I initiated a brief, cordial and productive exchange of correspondence with Duolingo's two founders and its VPs of marketing and legal. I suspect they were surprised one of their customers actually wrote to them.

When something bothers me about another app I use (e.g., car sharing), or I have constructive criticism (an airline, restaurant or hotel chain), I correspond directly with a top executive. It is not my last resort; it is often my first resort. Perhaps it is the lawyer in me (NYS Bar, 1985), but I have found that polite yet direct personal correspondence generates swifter and more satisfying results than an anonymous tip or complaint on a website.

This is just one of many related anecdotes: I founded one of the first foreign language Meetup groups in NYC in 2002. Meetup was an Internet startup and its app was, in 2002, a nettlesome work in progress. The content of its user forum was predictable: a torrent of indignant complaints about this or that -- far too many for the tiny startup to wade through or prioritize. I wrote directly to the founder to express my own group's top concerns, what my group sought most from Meetup. The founder invited me to Meetup's corporate headquarters on Prince Street. I was met, not by 2-3 programmers, but by the entire staff for a 3-hour brainstorming session. All because of a letter...

My two cents: If something needs fixing, write to the person who is most invested in it -- the person who regards the product or service as his or her baby, then describe how he or she could tweak the product or service to make it better than it already is. Then thank the person profusely for their patience in reading your suggestion. This approach won't work every time, but your success rate will be considerably greater than zero, which is all you should expect from Duolingo's Reddit feed.

Quite of a coincidence! I would bet on them modifying their algorithms, but yes, as you say, anything is possible.

Exactly. If anything, they must be having a hard laugh from our opinions about their system. Maybe that's how they know what areas need to be worsened. If someone says, "well, at least I like this about the app," then they say, "great, we hadn't noticed that that was still working as usual! Let's break it!"

Yeah the magic timer seems to be somewhere around 10 minutes. I used to prefer doing dthe learning on computer, but they started giving more xp for using the app, so I have switched now, to my great annoyance. I need the xp for the daily goal to save up gems, because the family plan I was graciously invited to was an accidental purchase, and I have a ton of courses needing gems to go legendary
Anyways, I'm rambling. I meant to say that I do the lesson on the phone, leave the last question while i read some posts on here on the computer, checking the clock for around 10 minutes to pass, and it gives me the timing and xp price I need for all those gems I'm gonna need once the family plan ends :D

When I get a time quest, I count to ten before hitting submit. That way I can make a lesson last longer and often do two lessons in 15 minutes. And it stops losing hearts by silly mistakes.

Or do what SansEspoir says:-
