When to use "ann" or "anns"?

Post by bobrichardson »

Just when I think I understand it, a different exercise shows that I don't really understand.

Can someone please explain when I should use "ann" versus "anns" for the English word "in"? Tapadh leat!

Generally, ann before indefinite nouns and anns before definite nouns.
For example,
anns an taigh = in the house
ann an taigh = in a house

"an" may vary with masculine or feminine nouns and the first letter of the noun word.

With locations, like city or country names, you need to be aware whether the location name in Gaelic includes a definite article (or not).

Here is the Akerbeltz page for "Ann An". The examples might be helpful.

"ann an" is a preposition where the following noun is placed in the dative case.

Here are the Akerbeltz pages for Masculine and Feminine nouns. Each of these pages has an associated summary pdf (at the bottom). The examples are mainly to show how adjectives are added, but also include all the articles for definite noun forms.
