They are used to give sound as well as can be used independently.
अ ( sound - a ) When "a" is used as an article in english. This is how it is spoken.
आ (sound - aa) The sound is same as used in word "Grass"
इ ( sound - i) pick, tick
ई ( sound - ii) peek, seek
उ (sound - u) hook, nook
ऊ (sound - stressing over u) duke
ए ( sound - e) pen, can
ऐ (sound - ae) paint
ऋ ( sound - ri) It may look like chinese character - River, Rigid
ओ (sound - o) oak, poke
औ (sound - ou) foul, owl
अं (sound - ang) sung, rung
अः ( sound - ahh) it is just a + hh sound : I didn't find any suitable english word for it.
Practice vowels is the first basic thing every Hindi learner should do.
If you have already started working on words with consonants then add some vowel related commonly used words in your Hindi vocabulary.
