日文問題

Post by Pamelayyy »

In this sentence, the first "の" (no) functions as a pronoun that replaces a noun. It follows an adjective, in this case, "くろい" (kuroi, meaning "black"), to stand in for a noun that is understood from the context. In English, "の" is similar to the word "one." for this case. The full sentence translates to "Whose umbrella is this black one?" Here, "くろいの" (kuroi no) means "black one," with "の" (no) replacing the noun "umbrella" (かさ, kasa) that would normally follow. In English, you might say "This black one is mine," where "one" is used to avoid repeating the noun. The Japanese "の" works in a similar way to avoid redundancy by not repeating the noun as @ararat-tempest explains.

Ex.1:
「あかいは だれの かばんですか。」
(Whose bag is the red one?)
In this example, "の" is standing in for "bag" (かばん), making it "the red one."

Ex.2:
「おいしいを ください。」
(Please give me a delicious one.)
Here, "の" is replacing a noun understood from context, similar to saying "something delicious" or "a delicious one" in English.

The more I think, the more I realized that this problem is not so simple when compared to Chinese. It may be easier to understand if you think of "東西" (thing) as hidden after the first "的" in Chinese. Just like「這個黑色的(東西)是誰的傘?」(Whose umbrella is this black thingy? ) I remember making mistakes like this when I first started learning Chinese:
「這個黑色的是誰的傘?」(X)

On the other hand, I think Chinese people who are just starting to learn Japanese often make mistakes like this (just like you did) :
「この黒い傘はだれのですか?」(這把黑色的傘是誰的?)(X)
