Is it unnecessary to add the possessive adjective before sorella? The gender differs from fratello.

Translate: "A grandson is the son of your son or daughter"

Result as expected: "Un nipote è il figlio di tuo figlio o tua figlia"

Quindi la stessa parola è usata per entrambi i rapporti familiari.
