why not "az szomorú"?

You are right, that should be az in literal translation, but Hungarian language works with different logic:
if we say az szomorú, we would think that you mean azok (e.g. in plural), a kóreai turisták, while the English sentence means that the whole situation is sad, so in Hungarian we express it like this: ez szomorú, or ez can be even left out.
It might be really confusing, I can imagine, I'm sorry that Hungarian is so different from almost anything you know, but well done for all the Hungarian learners and keep on, I'm here to help you!
