Re: Sju or syv?

Is that like hvad or hva ? I notice that Duolingo uses Hva (so far).

C'est pas grave

Every time I've heard a native speaker say this, he or she says "c'est pas grave" instead of ce n'est pas grave. I used c'est pas grave in a Duolingo exercise and was marked wrong. Is this considered grammatically correct or is it just a colloquial thing that a lot of people say, like ouai...

Bruno and Anne only left the next day.

This is a very ambiguous sentence in English. It can mean. Bruno and Anne only left the next day. (So after their trip to Versailles, they only had one day left. I can't believe that they only left (allocated) the last day for Euro Disney. ) (I was looking for Bruno and Anne last Monday. ) Well they...

Re: Using mchat for discussions in French?

Merci Monique. Depuis mon dernier message, j'ai déjà trouvé quelqu'un sur Tandem, qui est une application que j'ai déjà utilisée. J'apprécie ton aide.

Re: Using mchat for discussions in French?

Thanks Monique. I don't think I'm ready to chat in German yet. French, yes, because I used to train people using French in Africa about 20 years ago. I'm just up to level 10 in German in Duolingo, although I did a short course in German, when I was at university in the 70s, mainly for reading German...

Re: Using mchat for discussions in French?

I'm interested in using mchat to improve my French but I'm in Australia. I have previously used Skype and Zoom for regular sessions in Italian with a native speaker. I'm reasonably flexible for time, being retired but Evenings here translate to mornings in Europe, so that might be a problem. I'm slo...

Re: Is there a trick for memorising Chinese characters ?

I remember from a short course many years ago that the radicals are important, and you can "spell" characters using their radicals. So for example with 猪 and 朱. If there is confusion, you could ask 什么 (猪) Shenme zhū ? - and they would reply perhaps with 犭(quǎn zhū) where quǎn 犭is the radic...

Is there a trick for memorising Chinese characters ?

Sorry if this post seems naive, but I'm a total beginner to Chinese characters and I'm up to about 276 "words" according to Duome. Some characters such as hǎo 好 (mother and child) are easy, and I've kind of worked out how some characters look a bit like the meaning. For example chá 茶 looks...

Re: New Voices

They add a bit of variety. There is a similar spread of voices to those in French and German. I haven't got far enough in the course to tell if the tones all sound high on the child voice. (This is my first post on here)
