Etymology Fun

Just a tip I thought I'd share from an experience I had during a class. We were learning the etymology of the months of the year, and it occurred to me that each month had an interesting origin. This could apply to days of the week, or other groupings of words. I had asked my instructor for a good s...

Re: Ukrainians foods

I find that a lot of my family's "traditional" cooking has evolved. Both sides of my family came to Canada in the late 1890s, and they were Ukrainian-speaking farmers from Galicia. Over time, their own Ukrainian/Canadian dialect began to evolve and I am thinking their ways of preparing foo...

Radio Kultura

Ukrainian-language radio station Radio Kultura Радіо Культура has resumed a lot of programming that I believed was extremely helpful when listening to the Ukrainian language. In my opinion, if you do not have a conversation partner, listening to Ukrainian [talk/variety] radio is a wonderful way to t...

Re: Ukrainians foods

Not a dish, but a tasty topping: I make shkvarky (шкварки), which is a bit like fried bacon. If I were to look it up and translate it to English, they're called "cracklings" or "squeaks" (how cute!). I love having it on top of my perogies or cabbage rolls. Also, at Christmas, my ...

Thanks for looking into this !

I spoke with @Olly_1052 and if he has some time, he said he would help. :)

Re: Can you help translate "We're all in this together" ?

I am also not fluent in my target language, but I will certainly check with my native-Ukrainian-speaking contacts to see if they can help. Just to clarify, do you want the entire text translated? Or just the "we're in this together" or "welcome to the forums"?

Re: Will Duolingo remove a course in the future?

I can't speak for Jade, but if information was posted that revealed some personal information about someone (in this case, about Anna herself, who isn't on this forum to post anything about herself at her own discretion), it was likely removed for her protection. Also, any other information to solic...

Re: Will Duolingo remove a course in the future?

I have no doubt that Anna may be a skilled teacher and others may get good results with her course. Shopping around for the right program or instructor can take time. But when you hit on something, you can tell that it's right for you. For many, free courses can give the basics and can be quite enjo...

Re: Will Duolingo remove a course in the future?

I think it's still says something when someone is paid to do something as opposed to doing it for the love of doing it. I have personally known a few troublemakers who taught English abroad, because they had an ulterior motive. They wanted to meet a foreigner and fall in love, or they were only in i...

Re: Will Duolingo remove a course in the future?

@Ian768564 This must be the Anna you're referring to? https://www.ukrainianlessons.com/author/ul_admin/ I wasn't familiar with her, but I did attend some lessons from Hosts online after Covid from one in particular, and now her name escapes me! But it wasn't Anna Ohoiko. I would have remembered that...

@HeyMarlana Do you have sentences in the Ukranian course that don't have comments? In Hebrew some sentences haven't got comments. Re: Will Duolingo remove a course in the future?

I actually would love it if I could take an actual course in Ukrainian, in-person, with real instructors and be amongst people who wanted to learn, who I could meet and practice with. I learned German from night-school classes in 1997-1998, and it was right around the time the internet was starting ...

Re: Will Duolingo remove a course in the future?

That sounds very plausible, Ian. Many big companies have done away with public feedback, or how they receive feedback. They simply make choices and don't bother with the criticism. As for sentence discussions, I had a big problem with that as someone taking a smaller course like Ukrainian that didn'...

Re: Need some help translating a few words :)

Just a quick note on the verb "Кохати". The word love is more descriptive in Ukrainian, than the way we fling it around in English. When someone says "I love you" in the sense that you care deeply for someone like a parent, good friend, child, relative.. or whomever it is without...

Re: Хто ваш улюблений гравець у команді? (en → uk)

This is correct for Ukrainian. На is typically used for "on" in English, but in this case, the Ukrainian is correct for "у" which is "in". On is literal, as no one would be physically on top of a team, so to speak.

Not that I'm aware. I haven't been on for a while, and I only recall one program with many outlines. (Greetings, travel, etc.) So if they've introduced a second level, I too will have to check it out.

@vasjugan I can't speak for Duolingo, but I can tell you that Duolingo has been very apparent with cutting back, not investing more into courses like Ukrainian. They will shift things around with graphics and the feel of the site, but as for the programs themselves, the main courses they focus on ar...

Re: Drill - Write this in English: Дім там.

Sorry that I'm so late to this. But the translation of the sentence is correct: "The house is there." In Ukrainian the article can be omitted, so it is understood "house is here" or "home is here" is the same as "the house/home is there". When you say "Th...

I used the same approach. I let everyone know that I was learning Ukrainian so that if ever they stumbled across something, they could let me know. Re: Traditional Ukrainian greeting

It reminds me of the Easter greeting, as @Enzfj2 mentioned, and what the English possibilities would be if we spoke like this: Person 1: "Christ has risen!" Person 2: "No doubt!" I think of this like the days whenever people used to say "How do you do? Nice to meet you,"...

If you mean pronunciation, then I'm sorry, it's best to wait for a native Ukrainian speaker to clarify. To my knowledge the root word is still stressed the same, making the pronunciation the same along with the case-ending to follow.
