Re: coming to the end of things

I recently voluntarily killed my 1200 days streak to break the habit, then did a one month pause, and restarted a language I only learned for 6 months many years ago (Portuguese).

Re: How long did it take you to learn foreign language with a different writing system?

How long did it take you to learn a foreign language with a different writing system? It depends on the writing system and the systems you already know. Decades ago I learned hundreds of Chinese characters. It required quite a lot of effort but it helps a lot to understand their structure and etymo...

Re: How are non ASCII characters transcribed in different languages?

In Esperanto you can replace every accented letter with the unaccented letter followed by "x", which is not used in Esperanto : ŭ ŝ ĥ ĉ ĵ ĝ -> ux sx hx cx jx gx. Another method uses "h" : uh sh hh ch jh gh. This works fine because there is basically only one type of accent. It wo...

Re: What's your purpose of learning a foreign language by using Duolingo?

I like languages (natural and computer) and started to learn new languages, beyond school languages, 25 years ago. I spent many years learning Chinese with the Assimil method during long commutes by train. Then I stopped commuting, got children and it became impossible to have a daily routine the sa...

Re: Icelandic language

how/where can I make a request to developers to create a course of Icelandic language? There is no official channel to request course creation and volunteer based developments are closed. I've never seen any response from Duolingo to the many requests on the various unofficial channels (reddit, dis...

Re: 'The Prisoner' opening dialogue in Esperanto

Ĉe kies flanko vi estas?

There is this sample citation in vortaro "stari sur ies flanko", so following this you could write "Sur kies flanko vi staras?"

Anyway, congratulation for your translation, it's a difficult exercise.

Re: 'The Prisoner' opening dialogue in Esperanto

By hook or by crook we will (get the information) -> Iamaniere faros

The original verb is "to get", so I would translate into something like "(Ia) maniere ni sukcesos", to avoid emphasis the success and avoid the repetition of ricevi.

Re: 'The Prisoner' opening dialogue in Esperanto

You won't get it -> vi ne prenos ĝin.

You can't translate get with take. I would say "vi ne ricevos ĝin".

Re: 'The Prisoner' opening dialogue in Esperanto

That would be telling -> Tio estus diranta. "That would be telling” is an idiomatic expression used to say that you cannot tell someone something because it is a secret. It is often used in a playful or teasing way. You cannot translate with "Tio estus diranta", this means nothing in...

Re: Way to remember tio vs. tiu

This means that there are cases where tiu is not followed by a noun when the reader or listener knows what object or person it is.

  • Kiun aŭto vi volas? Mi volas ĉi tiun (aŭton).
  • Ĉu vi konas tiun (homon)?
  • Tiu (homo) estas mia frato.

Also keep in mind that the substantive (noun) following tiu can be implicit.

Re: Daily quests using the DL website

Some quests are cumbersome (such as do 12 lessons with speaking exercises). Some lessons have them, others don't. Legendary challenges don't feature any speaking exercises. If you have a practice tab you should have the option to do speaking or listening exercices allowing to fulfill your quest. pr...

Re: How can you complete 30 quests in 7 days?

If I do my three quests on Turkish and I switch to Arabic my quest list change and I have a new one I checked today but it doesn't work that way. Maybe I had a speaking quest and this kind of quest cannot exist in some languages like Esperanto or Arabic, this could explain why I had a fourth quest,...

Re: How can you complete 30 quests in 7 days?

@John Little If I do my three quests on Turkish and I switch to Arabic my quest list change and I have a new one, this could explain 4 quests a day, then you have possibly two friend quests, or one friend quest and something else unknown.

Re: Polygloss - A great way to practice your language

I've tested Polygloss, it's interesting but there doesn't seem to be many users. I've created matches for French, Turkish, Esperanto and even Toki pona but so far I've found only one very active user for Turkish. As some mentioned, you cannot filter the language level of your partner, but that's ok ...

Re: comments and observations on Busuu

The Busuu Premium grammar tips do help in the French course, very much. Didn't see tips in Turkish or Arabic. Won't make you a linguistic expert. They try to shift away from formal grammar study requirements. I think this is a good choice, you can always buy a grammar if you feel the need to become...

What other language forums do you know? Are there any? All the Brazilian people from the Duolingo are gone .. too bad.

Maybe I should try the Discord Android app...
