Re: Warum muss ich immer staubsaugen? [de→en]

"Why do I have to always vacuum?" just sounds generally wrong. Running it around my head, I can just about imagine a context where a native might say it in that way - with a stress on the "always" - but it would still seem grammatically wrong, as though the person had started spe...

Re: Are Ghosts real?

I'm basically agnostic on the subject, but my main question would be - why are ghosts usually only seen in dark, quiet, spooky places? 👻 Tricks of the light/imagination aside, I suspect a lot of ghost stories have traditionally been thought up and spread about by farmers and other landowners - e.g.,...

A friends cat was named Whisky. :) As a kid, we had two cats in succession called Whisky. I had no idea why they were christened Whisky. It wasn't until years later, when I met somebody else with a cat called Whisky that I realised that people call cats Whisky because of, well, their whisk - ers! I...

Re: How much practice do you need before it sticks?

I'm still experimenting, even just with Duolingo. I started as a bit of an obsessive note-taker, working on the idea that such a complicated language (Polish), even with the patient help of natives, could only be tackled with lots of notes. I'm having a go a Greek now, totally just doing a bit in th...

Depends if I'm just popping in for a quick glance around or if I know I've got time to stay awhile. I'll sometimes click on an "end" post because it pops up with the notification thing, and then end up gradually reading loads of others in reverse order. :)

Is "родом" a Ukrainian adverb?

On the Duolingo uk-en course, they use родом to mean "originally (from)" e.g. Я родом з Нью Йорка. I'm originally from New York. Я родом із маленького містечка. I'm originally from a small town. I've found lots of examples of Russian "родом" listed as an adverb with that meaning,...

It's a fascinating subject. On the one hand, to my little mortal brain the universe seems to be so huge snd full of stuff that life should inevitably just pop up randomly, all of the time, and for at least a tiny percentage of those lifeforms to randomly evolve into something intelligent and spacefa...

Do any of those words sound kinda old fashioned, lame, or too cheesy these days? Like, saying them could make your date bolt out the bathroom window, or even cost you a divorce?

Old fashioned and possibly cheesy, sure, but it's all about context. :)

ке́ксик = cupcake?

For such a small thing, this is slightly doing my head in. :) The Duolingo course often refers to кексик as a cupcake, but I'm getting mixed results looking around online, trying to find out if it's the commonly used word for cupcake in Ukrainian. I've also seen ті́стечко used for small cakes, inclu...
