Alternative to Google Translate with context A great translator which puts words into contextual sentences as examples, is Context Reverso. It’s free to login and there are enough examples without having to pay, if you don’t want to. There’s also an app. https://context.reverso.net/translation/engl...

How are you learning Polish?

Obviously Duolingo, or we wouldn’t be here, but what other methods are you using to learn Polish? For example, I’m also using Clozemaster, various youtube channels and Google translate. At this early stage, most novels are too complicated and Polish language movies are way too fast to follow! The bi...

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?!

Shame that there aren’t more people contributing. Obviously indicative of how few have come across from the DL forum, and that Polish learning was always going to have a lower number of participants. :?

Czekać - to wait

Can someone please explain the difference in
Poczekaj moment - wait a second, and
Zaczekaj chwilę - wait a minute

Ie what’s the difference between the Po and Za prefixes in this context? Is it literally wait ‘after’ a second and wait ‘behind’ a minute? Would it be wrong to just use czekaj?

Idioms

When learning a new language there are countless phrases/idioms that don’t translate literally. Eg, “So far” which is Jak do tej pory, however when you translate ‘pory’ using Google you get ‘seasons’ which is confusing! If you actually translate ‘so far’ using Google you get ‘jak dotąd’. So, are bot...

Native English speakers learning Polish

What has been your experience thus far learning this interesting language? I’m three months in, and have learned quite a bit of vocabulary and my passive skills are slowly improving. My active skills are still atrocious! Precisely how many years does it take before the grammar, the ‘endings’, the sp...

Synonyms?

Occasionally you come across words when you look them up or put them into Google translate that are given the same meaning. In English an example might be ‘thoughtful’ and ‘considerate’. I’ve just discovered that Porażka and Niepowodzenie both mean failure, but how would you know if there are specif...

Learn 2000 words…

…is the next goal and it turns out that there are only 1929 unique words in the Polish course. What kind of lame programming results in not even being able to fulfil the app’s own goals?!

Also, not much posting going on in this sub forum???

Sound sometimes doesn’t work

Occasionally on the sample sentences (web based DUolingo on an iPad - both Safari & Chrome browsers), the ‘Listen to’ ones don’t have any sound. You then either have to just guess or use the ‘cannot listen now’ button. Also the ‘Correct’ sound effect also just stops working for a bit. Both end u...

Is it just me, but the sentence discussions are just not loading today? Is this a side effect of the forum closure and is normal service likely to resume in time?

Complimentary learning tools

I’m assuming that various resources need to be employed to learn a new language. This web based word game was recommended to me recently and is quite fun. It can be saved as a web app to the home screen of your phone.

Re: [Duolingo] Are Tinycards coming back?

I discovered an app called Chegg Prep, which is a free flashcard app. There are many user generated decks which you can search for and you can of course create your own.

It’s strange to think that this used to be a feature and was something else that was discarded rather than developed.

What would make the perfect language learning app?

Quite a bit of negativity surrounds Duolingo, and even more so with the removal of the forums. Other criticisms revolve around some of the language learning content, portrayal of in depth grammar explanations and the reliance on having to utilise external sources to complement your learning. The abi...

Re: Polish word list

Thanks Stasia, Equally I can do that on Google translate! It just seems odd that they will list the words you have covered but no translation. Let’s be honest, a word doesn’t get committed to memory the first few times you see it. In other news I have discovered a flashcard learning app called Chegg...
