Re: Duolingo sentence Discuss button deviates to Duome

btw can you make it possible to create the duome thread from the discussion page? (same way the solution viewer works there (tho not on every sentence :?)) As in, from the Duolingo forum? I'll look into it, but not sure if the necessary data is fetched when those pages are opened... but I guess if ...

Post and correct Spanish Duolingo story summaries here!

When you submit the written summary exercises after Duolingo stories, Duolingo gives you some "AI grammar corrections" which are often quite good but still far from perfect, so this thread is for human corrections and improvements! You can use [diff] tags to post your corrections, like thi...

Re: Pronunciation of "las" in "las redes sociales"

I think this is an aspired s. Ahh I see, I kinda assumed "aspirated s" would mean [sʰ], but seems in the context of Spanish it just means ⟨s⟩ (or ⟨c⟩, ⟨z⟩) realized as [h]. However, both female voices later in the story don't do this, they pronounce [las ˈre.ðes soˈsja.les], di...

Pronunciation of "las" in "las redes sociales"

How is "las" pronounced in "las redes sociales"? Specifically, how is the ⟨s⟩ pronounced before the [r] in the next word? The sequence [sr] is quite difficult to pronounce, so it makes sense that it'd often be substituted for something else. In the title of the Duolingo sto...

Re: How do I stop making the stupidest mistakes?

I usually try constructing a sentence and drilling it several times (speaking it out loud) each time after I make the mistake, while thinking intensely about the meaning. For example, when you notice yourself mixing up “ocupado” vs “preocupado”, you make up a sentence like “no estoy ocupado, pero es...

Re: Location question

I don't really understand the question — the Chinese is different from the English because Chinese is a different language from English. Don't expect word order to always match up, because it won't. It's true Chinese is a subject-verb-object language, like English, but beyond that the word order is ...

mchat mentions are a feature of mchat itself, so they work differently to mentions in posts, which are a separate extension.

I doubt mchat will ever add support for self-mentions unless there's a clear use case for it — why would you want to do this particularly?

Re: Spanish impersonal 3rd person plural translated to passive voice in English

Use of the passive voice is often considered poor style in English It's only poor style when there's a clear agent to attribute the action to, and where that agent is at least equally important to the sentence as the patient is — you say "they were married in a church", not "a priest...

Yeah I think it's one of those cases where context is much more important than analyzing the grammatical structure. BrianEngst1 are you following the Duolingo course for Spanish? If so, it's usually helpful to check the "Tips" section before you start each lesson. For example, tú vs usted.

I think this should be accepted as an alternative answer — you can report it to Duolingo under "my answer should have been accepted". Still, even if not technically wrong, it's a little awkward as a translation. If trying to emphasize the one-ness rather than the woman-ness, you'd typicall...

Anyone know if there's any code that prevents code from being parsed into text formatting? I've usually seen and [plain] used, but neither of them seem to work on this forum.

Yes, you can do that with backticks. Multiline:

Code: Select all

Inline: `your code here`

Duo Unit 1 has recently finished. It is difficult to pronounce differently from Japanese kanji.
