"Jest" with the meaning of "there is"

Hello, About the two following sentences: Kot jest na dachu. Na dachu jest kot. I understand them as "The cat is on the roof" for the first one, and "There is a cat on the roof" for the second one. To me, it is two different uses of "jest": in the first one, "kot&q...

Re: Truskawka na torcie

Hello, and thanks for the details Dana_Dany Danuta, that is very interesting! Is there a similar expression that already existed before Hajto's? Hi Davey944676, I already knew "torcie" is locative for "tort", especially in this sentence where...

Truskawka na torcie

Hej,

I heard this expression in a video and searched it on Google, thinking it meant "cherry on top", but all I can find is articles with a guy named Tomasz Hajto. Did he make up this expression and what does it mean?

Thanks

Re: Il s'avère que...

Very interesting case. Originally, "s'avérer" means "to turn out to be true" (it is the meaning of latin "ver") and couldn't be used with an adjective: "la prophétie s'est avérée" = "the prophecy turned out to be true". This usage is now considered o...

Re: ne fais pas le malin avec moi

It can be quite large. You can use it when you know someone is messing with you, trying to bamboozle you, to take advantage of you. For example lying about something they did, or being a bit petty, sassy, slick, mouthed. Typically to a child who is talking back while you are lecturing them.

Samochód, auto, wóz, fura

Hello, What are the differences between these words? I guess they are all for a car (not any other mean of transport) and belong to different levels of language. My guess is "samochód" is the real Polish word, "auto" is a foreign word, "wóź" and "fura" are col...

Re: Origin of city names ending with -ów

Stasia Ah thank you very much for this complete answer! I only have one question: about Augustów, is it dopełniacz plural or an ancient form of singular?

"MBAB" is used in the French version of American Pie, but I've never seen or heard anyone use it IRL. We would rather use "MILF".

Re: How flexible is adjective-noun word order in French?

I would rather say "elle fait de très bons œufs", definitely more natural to me. Putting it at the end sorta emphasises it, and even if I wanted to emphasise it, I would just insist on "très bons" rather than moving it at the end. There are different reasons for changing the orde...

Re: Je me suis décidé...

I would rather say "Je me suis décidé à faire quelque chose ..." than "Je me suis décidé de faire quelque chose ...". "Je me suis décidé" conveys the idea of "I wasn't sure about it but finally made up my mind". Typically, if your child takes time to choose a ...

Origin of city names ending with -ów

Hello, For a while I thought the city name "Kraków" was plural, because the ending is, for a learner like me, typically a plural dopełniacz ending. My Polish teacher was surprised that I thought so, and when I told her this ending doesn't look like singular, she looked for other words with...
