Saying it wrong doesn't "feel" right

Not in my target language, I'm always getting that wrong. But in English. One of our Portuguese lessons with a real live teacher, in Brasil (on line), was to listen to a woman speaking. It's still not easy but this was made worse by the fact that, the woman we were listening to, was learning English...

ah, did you mean "冇"? this is Cantonese, it means "no", but also appears in Mandarin. I don't know "yes" in Cantonese. [/quote] Blimey! Thanks, Ararat! That makes sense. But is it "Mao" or "Moh"? Or something else? Edit: No is "Mo" or &quo...

是(shì) & 否(fǒu), the tone is different, yeah, but the pronunciation is also different. vâng & không, same tone but different pronunciation. proved. The sound I used to hear a lot or the sound that stuck in my mind, sounded like "Mao-wah". That same sound was said in two distinctly...

Re: Word matching exercise highlights English foibles

recently, verbs and adjectives in Vietnamese with same pronunciation but different tones caught me off guard in the word matching exercise...... and I realize Vietnamese is more difficult on remembering the vocabulary instead of the grammatical rules. Word matching exercise highlights English foibles

I quite often get caught out in the word pairing exercise where you need to match a word in one language with it's counterpart in the other. I always get caught by the English word "can", looking for "pode" or "consigo" (português for "can do") in the other co...

Re: Can you move past the Daily Refresh?

@JPK You need to select a section. Click on above panel with the headline (title - Cefr A1-B2) and you'll be able able to see completed path units and levels (=round circles). It might not be self explanatory on the first look; wildly clicking around will most likely resolve the puzzle :-) Maybe yo...

Re: Can you move past the Daily Refresh?

I seem to remember that in the old tree version you could go all the way through at level one then start again for the other levels. It was a choice between finishing each section to its final level before moving on or doing every section to the same level (if that makes sense). I wasn't aware that ...

Re: big discrepancy between regular and legendary lessons

You're quite right. It's because you "pay" for legendary lessons and only get three hearts. That means you need to either subscribe or watch more adverts to top up your gems. I used nearly all my gems to make my whole course legendary and was annoyed when they changed it. I had finished th...

Re: English Is Not Normal

Doing Duolingo for a couple of years has made us wonder about a lot of what the article talks about. I only really skimmed through it but I didn't notice a mention of the influence of printing on standard spelling (although it may be there). A lot of the weird spelling comes from mistakes that stuck...

The news mentions though that it will be possible to pay with self made coins that users need do cut out of thick cardboard, paint a green owl on each them (1 coin = 1 gem) and mail in to Duolingo's headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA.

:D

Duolingo to start charging for use.

1/4/24

thought the whole ethos of Duolingo was to promote language learning for free! I didn't mind a few ads but I think it's outrageous that all the work put in by all those volunteers is about to exploited big time! Well I for one won't be paying!

Thank you for the congratulations. @John Little

Thanks John, but there was almost no luck in this result of my efforts. It was calculated exactly according to the plan - breakdown: how many lessons for how much xp. Mostly it was 100 xp daily.

Blimey! Then double congratulations! :)
