Re: Minimum number of XPs to graduate from level 1

If for curiosity you start a course of any language you fluently speak (e.g. your mother tongue from English) you could test out of all skills just doing the exit test right away. You then get the owl with only 50 XP (all skills at 1 crown). Remember to start the course without placement test! A bot...

Re: Learning languages that use a different alphabet

Math and quantum mechanics combined use the entire Greek alphabet. They even add Greek looking letters such as the 'aleph' ∞ for infinity. The 'nabla' (an inverted capital delta) is used as a differentiator symbol for a vector function. With its 24 letters, the Greek alphabet is the easiest alternat...

Re: What is the story behind your username?

One single point of critic on the Video "How to translate French words into English": In the W versus GU debate (with William being the logical equivalent of Guillaume), it has been suggested that this originates from the Normands having adopted this from Norse. There is no evidence for th...

Re: My Spanish tree turned gold today!

You probably have discovered the Duolingo Spanish Podcasts by now. (Some slowly spoken Spanish intermitted with quite a lot of English narrator paragraphs to set the scene). You can also invert the whole setting and listen to English Podcasts for Spanish speakers . The narrator voice in Spanish sett...

If you toggle your profile Duolingo privacy settings to private, you don't get such updates anymore and you are also out of the leagues. On DuoMe, you may still check your personal learning performance; however you will not be mentioned in any DuoMe Hall of Fame.

Glad that my number of followers is still in the double digits. I can do without the massive applause whenever my streak surpasses a round number, I get an owl or make more than 10 lessons a day. My 'friend updates' shouldn't take more time than doing any lesson.

A star/the sun emits radiation far below and beyond the visible spectrum. Microwave type radiation (around 9 cm) is observed with radio-telescopes. At the dawn of the 21st century, I have been living in Luxembourg for four years. Because of my native Dutch, L2 French and some German, I have been able to read most of Luxembourgish. My experience with German is symmetrical from that one of IceVajal with (my native) Dutch. We had just one hour of German a week while in the last three years of secondary school. During my military service in Westfalen, I cranked up my German again. My speaking ability won't ever get beyond B1, but...

German and Dutch share over 80% of their vocabulary. For a Dutch speaker, learning German from his native tongue is easy. The same argument is valid for Portuguese and Spanish. Even though both languages share close to 90% of the vocabulary, the orthography differs quite a lot. You quickly develop a...

Infernal streak, trees and logs

When to subscribing to Duolingo in August 2020, the main objective was to learn Swedish. With Dutch as my mother-tongue, Swedish is relatively easy to learn. Stories are added to several more courses
