Is this use of "det" out-dated?

I have an old textbook (1980ish) that would have me translate "They are beautiful songs," as "Det er vakre sanger." The reason given is: "Det is used for all genders in both singular and plural when the noun is mentioned by name in the clause in which the word 'it' appears.&...

Thank you, Olav, but nouns don't become plural by adding "e", only adjectives do that. Isn't that correct? So is this an adjective pretending to be a noun but it doesn't require "de" in front?

Bifile kan forelske seg i mennesker av begge kjønn.

This sentence is closed to questions on the main Duolingo site. I've spent the last half hour trying to understand why the first word is "bifile" instead of "bifil". I think I've concluded that it is an adjective being used as a noun but wouldn't "de" be in front of it?...
