Re: Lied der Woche für Deutschlernen

These are wonderfully thorough analyses of these songs. I hope you'll consider doing more. I discovered Bettina Wegner listening to Hannes Wader, and would love to see your write up of him or of Franz Josef Degenhardt. Have you considered addressing what Americans call "Lieder", that is th...

Re: German words that shouldn't be used now?

I recently attended a production of the opera Il Travatore where the surtitles translated the Gypsies as "Roma". It really took me out of the 19th century opera set in the 15th century, to see such politically correct 21st century usage. You know, the opera where the witch's Gypsy daughter...

Duo keeps "adjusting" my position in the course

My position in the course has been adjusted several times because "we added new content." Mostly recently from section 6 to 5. That's probably a good thing, as I'm acing 5 and was only getting in the high 80s in section 6. But it's disconcerting. Anyone else experiencing this? I does appea...

Re: Riechen/schmecken nach vs riechen/schmecken wie

You're looking for "smells/tastes of", which indicates you detect the ingredient even if it doesn't predominate. "The wine tastes of cherry", "the wine tastes of hints/traces of cherry". It tastes like wine, i would not mistake it for cherry, but I taste some cherry or ...

zu trinken, zum Trinken

"zu trinken", infinitive of the verb "trinken", so "to drink". Ok, straight-forward English analogue. "zum Trinken"? Abbreviation of "zu dem Trinken.", yes? Literally "to the drinking" (not to the drinks , drinks is Getränken). "Drinki...

Re: Big changes coming to a Duolingo home screen near you!

I got the path on Android yesterday, and it's terrible. Up to now I did one lesson in a skill, then went to the next skill, then the next. This way I spread the lessons in any one skill out (spaced repetition) and didn't get bored. And my adaptive keyboard didn't see the same sentences repeatedly, u...

Re: How to see current day's xp in Android app?

The first Quest should at least be your daily goal. If it's not, I'd fill out a bug report.

My daily goal is 50, but the "daily quest" number changes every day, to anywhere from 10 to 50.

That prompted me to change my daily goal back to 50, only to find that it's still 50.

Where online to discuss German popular music?

Where can I find discussion, in English or German, about German pop music?

E.g., Hannes Wader, Bettina Wegner, Rainald Grebe, and in general what Germans call Lieder (not what is called Lieder in English, art song, although that's also an interest of mine).

I'd prefer a lesson count too, now that you mention it

How to see current day's xp in Android app?

Once I've exceeded my daily goal, the only way I can find to see my current day's XP is to go to the league tab, and click on my name. That shows a graph but not the number.

Is there any better way to see it?

Re: Big changes coming to a Duolingo home screen near you!

If you turn off automatic app updates, Duolingo will notice. You won't get the new interface, and Duolingo won't remove backend support for the old interface until most users have moved to the newer versions of the app. If the backend is mostly unchanged, this might work for quite a while. Eventuall...
