Re: Si sente specialmente di notte. (en → it)
I just want to let learners know that "specialmente", the default translation of the English "especially" on DL, while not wrong, is less common than "soprattutto".
So, when you translate "especially", go for "soprattutto" first.

This use of "amare" is a calque from English, which is utterly unnatural in Italian.
To make it sound (more) natural, you have to add a direct object and change the verb to "adorare": Ti adoro quando sorridi.

Re: Sarei un buon dottore
Yes, you're right. It should be "bravo/a" for people.
(And, taking it one step further, "medico" would be more natural than "dottore")

Re: Ho preso nota del numero di telefono. (en → it)
I've entered "I took down his phone number", but the phrasal verb "take down" has been rejected.
"Take something down" perfectly conveys the meaning of "prendere nota di qualcosa".
Reported.

Re: Le riviste sono soltanto disponibili in francese. (en → it)
The word order of the Italian sentence is unnatural. It should be "Le riviste sono disponibili soltanto in francese".

Yes! I, too, remember that post. My impression is that Duolingo just ran random sentences through an automatic translator back in 2012, when Google translate was not as good as it is now, which explains the amount of (wrong) literal and clumsy translations in both English and Italian sentences.

Italian has one word for "basketball player", cestista (from "cesto" = basket).

Re: Possiamo imparare dai fallimenti. (en → it)
Contrary to what DL makes out (and quite a few people in the SD have been misled), this is not idiomatic. In Italian we say "errori".
As a matter of fact "fallimento" is much less used than "failure" is in English.

English from Italian: meh (no tips; bad Italian)
Italian from English: mediocre to bad (too many errors in Italian to my liking)
German from Italian: bad (too many errors; also no tips)
German from English: I'm doing the old tree, which seems OK
edit: expanded a bit
