Re: "I love you!" in Egyptian

meri, mari, miri, short i, long i, ee, (Is that where we got our I from?), twi, twee, tweh, twuh, tw-erh, or is the w a vowel? As it would be difficult to even talk about the words without pronouncing them somehow, an Egyptological pronunciation came to exist. If you are to talk to a present-time E...

Re: Japanese tree versions

In the incubator, they are often stored as "forms of ..." For example: "forms of beber: bebo, bebes, bebe, beben, bebemos" Does this count as 5 or 1? In my table, it counts as only one. Let's call in this case "beber" the generic lexeme , and the other ones "speci...

Re: Old English

Does it even matter that much how you pronounce a dead language? I'm guessing most Latin speakers over the last few centuries sounded nothing like the ancient Romans or 12 th century monks. In case of Old English, I always found it simply fascinating how German it sounds. Especially in comparison w...

Re: Traditional Ukrainian greeting

The greeting discussed here sounds like an Ukrainian version of a traditional Christian greeting (in Latin: Laudetur Iesus Christus — in saecula saeculorum ) that had found its way into many languages around even if it's not widely used anymore. It's interesting to learn that it's the same in the Or...

Re: More on the Duolingo Yiddish accent

For the reference, this is the table as it appears in the video: || YIVO Yiddish | Duolingo Yiddish |-|-|- | אַ | a | a | אָ | o | u | ע | e | ey | י | i | i (bit, bean) | יי | ey | ay | ײַ | ay | ah | ו | u | i | וי | oy | oh I'm not sure what kind of transcription they used for the Duolingo column...

I am at Unit 100 and I don't see any writing exercises that wouldn't have the “use word bank” option.

Re: Check-button doesn't appear - can't solve the lesson

There are some kinds of exercises where the button is only enabled once you're done (match pairs, fill in blanks), and maybe these puzzle-like tiles work the same – the answer on the first screenshot isn't complete as there's a tile still missing after し. But this is merely speculation on my end as ...

Re: Counting Units

ほん、ぼん、ぽん are different forms of the same ほん. It's an euphonic change that depends only on the numeral that comes before it. It is いっぽん (1本)、にほん(2本)、さんぼん (3本)、よんほん (4本)、ごほん (5本)、ろっぽん (6本)、ななほん (7本)、はちほん or はっぽん (8本)、きゅうほん (9本)、じゅっぽん (10本)、ひゃっぽん (100本)、せんぼん (1000本). Some other counters, e.g. 匹 (ひき) or...

Re: What am I doing wrong?

On the screenshot, it looks like you have written おちや ochiya instead of おちゃ ocha.
The difference is that it should be written using the small kana ゃ rather than や.

Re: Kanji and Furigana

Except for some silly jocular uses of furigana, replacing the kanji with the furigana attached to it should, together with okurigana, if any, simply give you the phonetic kana spelling of the word in question, right? Writing something like たべる instead of 食べる or こうえん instead of 公園, that is using just...

Re: שלום־עליכם און זײַ געזונט. (en → yi)

Corinnebelle Gesundheit! And it's indeed related. I just barely started with Yiddish, but my understanding is that זײַ געזונט simply means be healthy; and, according to random Internet sources, it can be used not only as a parting phrase but in response to sneezing too.

Re: Duolingo sentence Discuss button deviates to Duome

I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong as I never used Tampermonkey before (I normally use a simple ~/.js-style content-script injector which probably wouldn't cut here because of isolated words), but it doesn't seem to ever get the challenges for me. If I understand it right, the script tries to...

Re: Say hello / こんにちは

Thank you for warm welcome! Crahdol Yes, this is mostly what I wanted to say except the part about French. What I tried to say was that I did some French because I wanted to get to know the French pronunciation, but, having mostly ignored the grammar, I couldn't pass the first che...

Re: Saying Cat in Different Languages

みゃんか myanka reportedly means ‘cat’ in the Yoron language, a Japonic language spoken on Yoron-jima about which I don't know anything but this. I wish someone would tell me how do they meow there.
