Come visit "Yiddish Creative Writing" in LifeandLanguage and see my latest story under "Another Yiddish Creation - 5" . I love writing original Yiddish stories! :)

I am also willing, as much as I can, to answer any questions about Yiddish.

Re: Duolingo Yiddish Learners

A lot of learners are missing the forums, where you could ask questions and have your queries answered by more knowledgeable people. Especially for minority interest courses like Yiddish, this is very important as without the feedback from other users, the course is frankly a bit tedious to follow....

I am getting better at Vertl. I once shocked myself and got the answer in only THREE TRIES! But that doesn't count the times I don't even get it in all six tries!

That sounds exactly like that would be the reason for stroke order with Chinese brush-and-ink writing. :)

Re: Hello

Not sure what you mean by "special significance", but there is a preferred way of writing the block print letters of Hebrew. Here is a child's version of the sequence of strokes for the letters:

Re: Saying Cat in Different Languages

I will jump in here with Yiddish (read from right to left): cat - קאַץ - ("katz") [singular] cats - קעץ - ("ketz") [plural formed with a vowel change] kitten - קעצעלע - ("ketzele") [literally "little cat" using a diminutive ending] Cats go מיאַו - ("mi-AU...

Kelikaku: The Hebrew link was good but I wish there was one in Yiddish. I tend to be easily distracted so I need to just focus on one language at a time. LOL I am rather OCD. Not to worry. The letters of Yiddish are the same as the letters of Hebrew (they use the same alphabet). There are only six ...

Re: חלב

OK, I see what you're saying. I was coming at your examples from Yiddish , but you were referring to Hebrew words. I know the Hebrew word for "water" is "mayim" and I believe that is a masculine plural ending. I didn't know the Hebrew word for "milk" , but you're saying...

Avinu Malkenu is a beautiful prayer. Our cantor sings it in our synagogue during the High Holidays using this melody. Wonderful choice!

Another Yiddish story from my collection of original Yiddish writing - 3

I use sentences from the Yiddish exercises in Duolingo as prompts and create original Yiddish stories that would give the sentences a context. One such sentence is: אַ גוטע נאַכט, קעץ מײַנע - "Good night, cats of mine!" (corrections accepted) (translation below) אַ גוטע נאַכט, קעץ מײַנע! ש...

Re: חלב

Not sure I understand your questions. With the word חלבֿ , are you referring to the word "tallow" ? It has no plural. And with the word מים , are you referring to the word "(internet) meme" ? This has a plural, מימען . And "milk" does not have a plural in either Yiddish...

"Do you use cursive Hebrew with Yiddish too? How do you write it?" Yes. You use cursive Hebrew with Yiddish as well. But that means you have to learn the cursive alphabet first. :) It's totally different from the printed alphabet as it is in any language. The Yiddish Book Center in Amerhe...

Re: Do you have a favorite Hebrew prayer?

Hi, Corinne. The only way that I can think of to get you the text of "Mi Khamokha" is to give you the URL of our temple prayerbook.

https://www.bcc-la.org/pdf/BCC_siddur_april14_2011.pdf

The prayer is on page 35.

Enjoy,

Re: Hello

Hi, Irai. I'm almost finished with the Yiddish tree myself, and I'm afraid there is no "trick" for learning the letters; it's just brute memorization. And, yes, some of the letters are very similar. And then there is the added business of needing to remember that some letters have a "...

Re: Hebrew Loan Words in Yiddish

OK. That means that this word מַעֲשֶׂה has changed meanings when it is used in Yiddish. I don't know how it is pronounced in Hebrew, but the word is pronounced "MY-seh" in Yiddish and means "story" . A "tall tale" in Yiddish is a באָ֜בע־מעשׂה . Interestingly, this has n...

Hebrew Loan Words in Yiddish

I study Yiddish on DL, and this language has many loan words from Hebrew. They are written out in Hebrew WITHOUT the vowel markings, so they cannot be sounded out. YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW THEM! I have found children's books written in Yiddish (Amherst Jewish Book Center) where the Hebrew words are tra...

Re: Do you have a favorite Hebrew prayer?

I am a student of Yiddish on DL (contributing to the Yiddish Forum here on Duome), but in attending Friday services at my temple, a lot of it is in Hebrew. In going through the sequence of the Friday night service, we come to one section which is "Mi Khamokha" . This is the prayer of thank...

I use sentences from the Yiddish exercises in Duolingo to create original stories that would give these sentences a context. One such sentence is: דאָס זענען נישט מײַנע פינגער - "These are not my fingers". This seems to call for a creepy horror story, don't you think? (corrections accepted...

A New Story for the English to Yiddish Forum

I wrote original Yiddish for the Duolingo Yiddish Forum, and the very last story that I managed to include was based on the sentence, "the potato is hot" . I had to think of a context for this sentence, and so I came up with the following: (translation below) איך האָרעװע זײער שװער. איך בין...
